DALLAS, Texas - TCU had three players score in double-figures Wednesday night, but came up just short, falling to SMU inside Moody Coliseum, 74-59.
The Rundown
The Horned Frogs, who were receiving votes in both polls this week, moved to 8-1 on the season, while the Mustangs improved to 7-3 overall.
For the game, sophomore Alex Robinson and Vladimir Brodziansky both tallied 12 points apiece, respectively. Robinson also tied a career-high in assists with 10 on the night. His 10 assists were the most since former Frog Hank Thorns dished out 11 at Air Force in 2011. Brodziansky has now made 13-straight field goals. He hasn't missed since the first half of the Nov. 30 game versus Washington.
Freshman Jaylen Fisher was also in double-figures for a fourth-straight game with 10 points. Finally, Kenrich Williams once again led the way in rebounds, corralling 13. With his 13 boards, Williams, who ranks No. 13 in the NCAA in offensive rebounds, has now recorded three-straight games of 10 or more rebounds. TCU also moved to 7-1 all-time during his career when the junior records double-digit rebounds in a single-game.
SMU was led the on the night by Semi Ojeleye's 23-point outing. Shake Milton was also in double-figures with 17 points on 4-of-9 from the field.
The Frogs once again dominated off the bench Wednesday, outscoring the Mustangs, 35-7, but TCU could only cut it to three midway through the second half off a Brandon Parrish triple. For the game, the Frogs shots 42.6 percent from the field and were out-rebounded for only the second time this season, 34-31.
The two teams would open the second half by trading three balls 2 minutes into the period until Brodziansky made it a 39-33 game with 15:14 on the clock. A couple of trips later, Robinson got into the act, knocking down a deep three to bring the scoreboard to a five-point game at 41-36.
With SMU clinging to a 48-40 advantage at the 11:08 mark of the second stanza of action, Parrish would hit a gigantic three ball from the top of the key to make it a 48-45 ballgame with a little over 8 minutes remaining in the contest. Chris Washburn then threw down a flush at the 7:43 mark to bring the scoreboard to 51-47 in slight favor of the Mustangs.
Fisher would make it a 57-51 game with 6:06 left, connecting on a floater, but that was as close as the Frogs would get the rest of the way, falling for the first time Wednesday night.
SMU jumped out to a 9-3 lead until Robinson found Williams wide open for a triple to inch the Frogs closer at the 16:43 mark of the opening frame. The junior scored the opening six points for the Purple and White. The Mustangs would extend their lead to 19-8 midway through the opening frame, but Fisher would stall the attack at the 11:26 mark, tickling the twine from deep off an assist from Robinson.
With the scoreboard reading 25-15 in slight favor of SMU, Trent went to work, scoring an old fashioned three-point play on a tear drop to make the scoreboard read 25-18 with 7:53 on the clock. A few plays later, Robinson got into the act, scoring a jumper to make it a 27-21 ballgame in the opening frame of play.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips as SMU still held a 29-26 advantage with about a minute left following a layup in the paint by JD Miller. A late turn-around jumper in the closing seconds by Brodziansky brought the halftime deficit to 33-28.
