FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU had five players score in double-figures Saturday night en route to a 72-63 victory over Wofford inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Rundown
For the game, the Horned Frogs pushed their advantage to as many as 11 in the second half Saturday and then were able to make just enough at the charity stripe to improve to 9-1 on the season and remain unbeaten at home in non-conference play.
Freshman Jaylen Fisher tallied a team-high 13 points in the win, while Kenrich Williams added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Williams' now has a double-double in three out of the last four games, while also recording his fourth-straight game with 10 or more rebounds. JD Miller was also in double-figures Saturday with 12 points on 4-of-7 from the field. Vladimir Brodziansky and Desmond Bane rounded out the Horned Frog notables, totaling 10 points apiece, respectively.
TCU, who recorded a 39-33 advantage in rebounds, limited the Terriers to 41.3 percent from the field and a dismal 25 percent from behind the arc. For the game, the Frogs were stifling on defense, holding Wofford (3-7) to a 5-for-20 showing from behind the arc.
The Terriers were carried on the night by Fletcher Magee's 18-point outing. Ryan Sawvell was the only other player in double-figures with 12 points. He also added 13 rebounds in the loss.
Fisher got the Frogs going early in the second half, tickling the twine from deep to give TCU a 35-28 lead with 17:52 showing in the period. A few plays later, Miller would take flight, soaring to the hole for a dunk to give the Purple and White a 39-30 advantage with 15:48 on the clock.
Wofford would score the next five to inch closer at 39-35, but Brodziansky would have nothing of it, finding the bottom of the net down low to stall the Terrier attack at the 14:18 mark. Bane then pushed the TCU advantage to 44-39 midway through, scoring four-straight before Brandon Parrish rattled home a three at the 10:04 mark to increase the Purple and White lead to 10 at 49-39.
TCU would push its advantage to 55-44 with a little over 7 minutes remaining in the game off a layup by Karviar Shepherd, but Wofford would cut it to 60-53 down the stretch before Brodziansky hit an old fashioned three-point play to regain the 10-point advantage for TCU at the 4:09 mark.
Wofford would continue to battle though, cutting it to 64-61 in the final minutes, but Parrish stalled the Terrier attack at the 1:18 mark, recording another triple to make it a 67-61 lead for the Purple and White. TCU was able to put the game away at the line to remain unblemished at home on the season.
Wofford jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the contest until Fisher connected on a runner at about the 13-minute mark to pull the Frogs within four. The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but Miller would give the Purple and White a 16-13 lead midway through, scoring a flush and a three ball with a little over 8 minutes remaining in the opening frame.
TCU would take a 20-17 lead in the first half when the sophomore found a cutting Williams down low for the bucket at the 6:22 mark. A few plays later, Bane went on a tear, scoring five-straight to increase the Purple and White advantage to 28-24 with 2:15 remaining in the opening half. TCU would take a 31-26 lead into intermission.
Quote of the Game
Jamie Dixon, TCU Head Coach
"I thought our students were great tonight. We are starting to build that home court and I know they have finals this week. I thought we could've played better tonight, but we have a lot of positives as well. We took care of the basketball and were able to get to the foul line. We wanted to get the ball inside and that was a big emphasis for us after the SMU game. Tonight we did that."
