AMES, Iowa - TCU had three players score in double-figures Saturday, but No. 15 Iowa State used a strong second half to drop the Horned Frogs at Hilton Coliseum, 83-66.
Senior Trey Zeigler carried the Frogs, scoring a team-high 14 points, including eight in the first half, on 7-of-14 from the field. Chris Washburn and Brandon Parrish were also in double-figures, tallying 11 points apiece, respectively. Parrish went 3-for-5 from behind the arc Saturday. His three triples tied a season-high and marked only the fifth time this season the sophomore has scored in double-figures.
It was a tale of two halves Saturday in a game early that featured seven ties and 11 lead changes. TCU, who trailed by only two at halftime, went back and forth with the nation's No. 15 ranked team during the opening stages Saturday, but midway through the second half, the Cyclones slowly pulled away.
For the game, the Horned Frogs forced ISU into 13 turnovers, while outscoring the Clones in points off turnovers, 15-9. TCU also recorded a 13-8 advantage in fast break points.
Iowa State was carried by Georges Niang's 23-point outing. Monte' Morris and Bryce Dejean-Jones each tallied 16 points apiece.
With the loss, the Horned Frogs moved to 14-7 overall and 1-7 in league play, while the Cyclones improved to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in Big 12 action.
Iowa State would score the first four points of the second half, but a follow up bucket by Karviar Shepherd stymied the Cyclone attack early on, making the scoreboard read 39-35. TCU would continue to battle, but ISU went up by 10 a few moments later before Parrish ripped the nets from deep to inch the Frogs back within seven 5 minutes into the second half.
With the scoreboard 52-40 in slight favor of Iowa State, Zeigler went back to work, blowing by a would-be defender and laying it in off the glass at the 12:24 mark of the second half. A few plays later, Anderson buried one from deep and the Frogs appeared to be in business as the senior found Kenrich Williams for a layup the next trip down to make it a 52-47 ballgame at about the 10-minute mark.
That was as close as TCU would come the rest of the way as the Cyclones won for only the sixth time in the all-time series.
Shepherd got the Frogs on the board on the opening possession, nailing a jumper. A few plays later, Washburn found the bottom of the net and TCU was off and running as Anderson tickled the twine from deep early to give the Frogs a 7-4 advantage.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but Iowa State would take a 16-9 lead at the 13-minute mark of the opening frame of play. Fields and Parrish would end the run, burying back-to-back triples. By the time Anderson found Williams at the 11:36 mark, the Frogs had jumped all over the Cyclones, now up 17-16 after an 8-0 spurt.
With the scoreboard 21-20 in slight favor of Iowa State, Zeigler connected in transition to regain the Frog advantage. Washburn and Zeigler then exploded to the hole to give the Purple and White a 26-24 advantage with about 5 minutes remaining in the half.
Iowa State would push it to 33-28 down the stretch, but Zeigler would have nothing of it, driving to the rack and finding the bottom of the net to inch TCU closer. Parrish then tickled the twine from deep to bring the halftime score to 35-33 in slight favor of Iowa State.
