FORT WORTH, Texas - No. 25 TCU outscored Grambling State 42-17 in the first half Monday and never looked back, winning comfortably at Wilkerson-Greines, 80-39.
When it was all said and done Monday, the Horned Frogs, who improved to 12-0 on the season, held the Tigers to the ninth fewest points by an opponent all-time in first half action. The Frogs smothering defense hassled GSU into only 23.9 percent from the field for the game and 20 turnovers.
In first half action, Grambling made only five shot attempts. On the flip side, TCU, who closed the period on an 18-2 run, shot 48.3 percent from the field for the game, including 47.4 percent from deep, outscoring the Tigers off the bench, 45-19.
Kyan Anderson led the way for the Frogs with a game-high 17 points on 4-of-7 from the field. Fellow guard Chauncey Collins was the only other Frog in double-figures with a career-high 13 points on 4-for-6 from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc.
A'Torri Shine carried Grambling State with 10 points on 2-for-12 from the field. No other Tiger scored in double-figures for GSU, who fell to 2-8 overall.
TCU opened the second half scoring the first four points as Anderson drilled a jumper with 18:24 showing on the clock, which made the score 46-17. By the time Kenrich Williams threw down a flush at the 16:10 mark of the second stanza of action, the Horned Frogs had jumped out to a 50-18 lead.
The Frogs coasted the rest of the way to remain unbeaten and improve to 12-0 on the year.
Anderson jumped the Frogs on top early, tickling the twine from deep on the opening possession. Fellow senior Trey Zeigler then got into the act, cutting to the hole to give the Frogs a 5-3 lead at the 17:43 mark. GSU would continue to battle, going on a mini 4-0 run, but Zeigler slashed to the hole a few plays later to tie the ballgame at 7-7.
Collins would break the tie at about the 13-minute mark, dropping a triple from the top key to give the Frogs a 10-7 advantage. The freshman continued to make a splash the next couple of trips, dropping back-to-back three-balls to light up the scoreboard at 13-8.
By the time Karviar Shepherd found pay-dirt midway through, the Frogs were in the midst of a 15-3 run. A few plays later, the sophomore rattled the rim for a thunderous dunk, which gave TCU a 12-point lead at 24-12 with 9:24 showing on the clock.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips until Anderson dropped his second trey ball of the half, this time from the right side of the court to give TCU a 12-point advantage at 27-15.
On the very next trip, Amric Fields connected on an old-fashioned three-point play and the Purple and White were in business, now up 30-15. The senior then proceeded to swat away a would-be shot on one end and then receive a beautiful pass from Anderson at the 3:41 mark to make it 32-15.
The Frogs would close the rest of the half with ease, outscoring GSU the rest of the way, 10-2 to take a 42-17 halftime lead. The 17 points were tied for the ninth fewest by an opponent in school history. In all, TCU closed the first half on an 18-2 run.
