With the win, the Horned Frogs have now recorded the 10th-best start in Big 12 Conference history, tying Oklahoma State's 2001-02 team. The Frogs, who are one of only five remaining unbeaten teams in the NCAA as of Monday night, also closed out non-conference play undefeated for the first time in school history.
On the night, TCU, who is receiving votes in both national polls, used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to break the game wide-open. When it was all said and done, the Frogs closed the contest, outscoring the Tigers down the stretch, 21-6. During the run, TCU's relentless defense forced Tennessee State into a 2-for-11 showing from the field.
Kyan Anderson led the way for the Frogs, scoring a game-high 16 points, while fellow senior Trey Zeigler totaled 10 points on 4-of-6 from the field. Sophomore Chris Washburn just missed his first career double-double, scoring eight points, while grabbing a career-high 12 boards. Not to be outdone, sophomore Kenrich Williams also corralled 13 rebounds in the win.
TSU (2-12) had one player score in double-figures as Jay Harris tallied 10 points on the night.
As a team, TCU out-rebounded the Tigers to the tune of 50-29. The Frogs, who forced Tennessee State into a 31.8 percent from the field, also controlled the paint, out-scoring TSU down low, 34-12.
The two teams would open the second half trading possessions, but TCU built a 37-31 lead at the charity stripe despite a 12-4 run by the Tigers to open the half. Washburn would end the Tennessee State attack, powering home a layup with a little over 11 minutes remaining in the period.
With the scoreboard reading 39-34 at the 10-minute mark of the half, Washburn went back to work, cleaning up the glass to propel the Frog advantage to 41-34. A few plays later, Williams got involved on both ends of the court, rejecting a shot on one end and then receiving an outlet pass to find the bottom of the net at 43-34 with 8:49 showing on the clock.
A deep three-ball by Anderson gave the Frogs a 48-34 lead midway through and the Frogs were able to jump on-top 52-34 off a 13-0 run and never look back, winning comfortably Monday night to close out non-conference play. The Horned Frogs will open Big 12 action against West Virginia Saturday.
Zeigler got the Frogs going right out of the gate, scoring a layup in transition to give TCU an early 2-0 lead. The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips until Washburn rattled the rim with a thunderous dunk to give the Frogs a 5-4 lead with a little over 17 minutes remaining in the opening frame.
With the scoreboard at 8-7 in favor of the Tigers, Hudson Price tickled the twine from deep, but TSU would tie the ballgame at 10-10 on the other end midway through the opening frame of play. On the very next possession, Amric Fields rattled one home from deep, which made it 13-10 with 11:41 showing on the clock. Anderson then showed off his handles, crossing over his defender and finding Williams inside the paint to make it 15-10 at the 10-minute mark.
TCU was in the midst of a 10-0 run following a trey ball from the left side of the court by Anderson. During the run, Fields electrified the crowd by exploding to the hole for a two-handed jam at the 9:41 mark of the period. Collins then ripped the nets a few plays later to make it 23-10 and the Frogs were off and running.
The Tigers would continue to battle, making it a 28-18 ballgame down the stretch, but TCU took a 33-19 lead into the break following a floater by Anderson in the closing seconds.
