With the win, the Horned Frogs improved to 11-0 on the season, while the Roadrunners fell to 4-5 overall. The Purple and White, who are receiving votes in both polls, need only two more wins to tie Oklahoma State for the 10th best start all-time in Big 12 Conference history.
Sophomore Brandon Parrish carried the Frogs Saturday, scoring a team-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. The Arlington native also blocked a career-high five blocks, while grabbing four boards. Kyan Anderson followed by scoring 16 points, including a three-pointer midway through the second half that pushed him into No. 10 all-time in program history in scoring, surpassing Bingo Merriex and Mike Jones. The senior also tied a career-high with nine assists. Kenrich Williams and Trey Zeigler rounded out the Horned Frog notables, scoring 12 and 10 points apiece, respectively.
The Roadrunners had one player score in double-figures as Keon Lewis notched a game-high 23 points on 7-of-11 from the field.
For the game, TCU, who closed the first half on a 20-6 run, shot a blistering 60.8 percent from the field, while UTSA was held to a season-low 32.6 percent from the floor. The Frogs out-rebounded the Roadrunners to the tune of 40-18 and held a 21-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
UTSA would cut the halftime deficit to 43-32 before Anderson dropped a deep jumper at the 17:52 mark to regain the Frog advantage at 45-32. A few plays later, Karviar Shepherd found the bottom of the net on an old-fashioned three-point play and the Purple and White were in business once again.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Parrish midway through the second half lit up the scoreboard, which gave TCU a 61-37 lead. The Roadrunners tried to cut into the deficit, but Chris Washburn put an exclamation point on the night, following up a miss and rattling home a dunk under the 10-minute mark to make it 67-44.
The two teams would open the contest in a frantic pace, but Anderson drilled a triple at the 18:06 mark to give the Frogs a 3-2 lead. The senior then connected on a run-out, faking a pass one way and finding the bottom of the net, which propelled the Frog advantage to 5-2 early on.
UTSA would jump on top 7-5 off a mini 5-0 run, but Devonta Abron would have nothing of it, powering home a layup with 16:56 showing on the clock. A few plays later, Williams got into the act, soaring to the bucket for a thunderous dunk to tie the ballgame at 9-9. The Roadrunners answered right back to take a two-point advantage, but the sophomore proceeded to tickle the twine from deep to give the Frogs a 12-11 lead at the 12-minute mark.
With the scoreboard knotted at 16-16, Williams continued his hot start to the contest as the Waco native scored an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Frogs a 19-16 lead with a little over nine minutes remaining in the first half.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips and TCU was able to push its leads to 25-22 at the charity stripe. Williams then went back to work, drilling another jumper from the corner before Washburn went coast-to-coast to give the Frogs a 29-22 lead with 4:26 left to go in the half.
By the time Parrish found the bottom of the net plus the foul at the 2:25 mark, the Frogs were on a 9-2 run. The offensive spurt gave the Purple and White a 10-point advantage at 34-24 down the stretch.
The Frogs would continue to make an impression down the stretch, closing the half on a 12-2 run to take a 43-26 lead into intermission. In all, the Purple and White went on a 20-6 run after UTSA had cut it to 23-20 early in the opening frame of play.
TCU will return to action Monday against Grambling State, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
