FORT WORTH—Three Frogs scored in double figures, and TCU earned its first victory over Houston since 2005 during a 79-63 victory over the Cougars Saturday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
TCU improved to 4-2 with the victory and is now 3-0 at the DMC this season. Houston dropped to 4-2.
The Frogs snapped a two-game skid against the Cougars in grand style, recording their second-largest margin of victory ever against UH. TCU led by five points at intermission before putting the game out of reach early in the second half. The Frogs led by as many as 22 points late in the contest.
Junior guard Ronnie Moss scored a game-high 17 points to lead TCU. Sophomore forward Garlon Green had a very efficient day from the field, making 7-of-11 field-goal attempts, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, while scoring 16 points.
Junior guard J.R. Cadot, making his third consecutive start, fell just shy of a double-double with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Cadot had eight boards in the first half on his way to setting a career high on the glass. Junior guard Hank Thorns and senior forward Nikola Gacesa notched nine and seven points, respectively. Thorns collected a game-high five assists.
Four Cougars scored in double figures, including guard Adam Brown, who totaled 14 points, and forwards Alandise Harris and Kendrick Washington, who had 12 points each. Guard Zamal Nixon chipped in 10 points.
TCU jumped on top of the Cougars from the game's outset, building an eight-point advantage in the opening five minutes. The Frogs made five of their first six shots from the field, including a pair of baskets each by Green and junior guard Hank Thorns.
UH cut into TCU's lead with some successful long-range shooting. A 3-pointer by Adam Brown just under 11 minutes into the game gave the Cougars their only lead at 21-20, but the Frogs responded with a 6-0 run and never looked back.
Green answered with the first of his two treys to regain the lead for TCU, and junior Nikola Gacesa recorded a layup after making a steal on Houston's end of the court. A dunk by freshman forward Amric Fields followed to put the Frogs up 27-21 with 7:18 remaining in the period.
TCU put the game away in the second half with a 12-2 run that pushed the lead to 16 points with just over 10 minutes remaining. The spurt featured a trio of Frog 3-pointers, once each from outside by Green and Moss and another inside with a foul on senior guard Sammy Yeager. Yeager's play was typical of TCU's attacking style of offense in the second half. The Frogs, who shot a season-high 26 free throws overall in the contest, went to the line 19 times following intermission.
For the game, TCU shot 45.3 percent from the field and posted a 38-34 advantage on the glass. The Frogs pulled down 13 offensive boards and outscored the Cougars 20-8 in second-chance points and 26-13 in points off turnovers.
TCU returns to the DMC court Monday, when it finishes off its participation in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic with a 7 p.m. matchup against the USC Trojans. The game will be televised live by The MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn.).
