Overall, the Horned Frogs won their 11th season opener in 12 seasons under head coach Jeff Mittie.
Carter and the Horned Frogs jumped out to a sizeable early lead and never looked back as five different players scored in double figures. The 58-point victory was the eighth-most lopsided win in program history. Carter, a Bossier City, La., native, surpassed 1,000 points for her career Friday night, scoring on a driving layup at the 8:45 mark of the second half.
TCU torched the Huskies from the opening tip, running out to a 22-4 lead in the game's first 8 minutes, 45 seconds of play. The Frogs reeled off a 22-0 run following an early 4-0 deficit, while holding the Huskies scoreless for nearly a six-minute stretch. The No. 23 ranked squad had built the lead to 49-12 by halftime, holding HBU to the sixth-lowest scoring total for a TCU opponent in a first half in program history.
Helena Sverrisdottir, a preseason All-America honoree, scored the Frogs first points of the season, driving to the hole for an early layup. Halfway through the early portion of the first half, Carter connected on two-straight three pointers from the right side of the court and Houston Baptist never recovered as TCU forced 28 turnovers for the game and held the Huskies to only 27.5 percent shooting, including only one three-pointer for the entire contest.
Carter, an all-conference honoree a year ago, totaled 26 points, three assists and five rebounds, while sophomore Starr Crawford collected her sixth double-double of her career, scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sverrisdottir, the returning MWC Player of the Year, also had a solid opening night, wrapping up play with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Not to be outdone, sophomore DeLisa Gross and senior Rachel Rentschler totaled double figures with Gross collecting 13 points and Rentschler finding the bottom of the net with 11 points. Rentschler tied a career high by going three-for-three from behind the 3-point stripe.
With the win, TCU moved to 1-0 on the season, while Houston Baptist dropped to 0-1. The Frogs are now 2-0 all-time against the Huskies. In those victories, the Purple and White have collected the second and eighth-most lopsided wins in program history with a combined score of 205-68.
TCU will continue its season-opening, two-game homestand next Wednesday, when SMU visits for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off at the DMC.
