Prince scores 31 to lead Horned Frogs to first ranked win in three seasons
FORT WORTH – TCU women's basketball is here to stay.
Faced with its first of three tilts with a preseason AP Top 10 team, the Horned Frogs stood tall, upsetting No. 13 NC State 76-73 inside Schollmaier Arena on Sunday.
The Frogs earned their first ranked win since 2021 and first victory vs. a top-15 foe in six seasons. The results also marked the program's first-ever triumph over a reigning Final Four participant.
Sedona Prince and Hailey Van Lith proved a deadly one-two punch.
Prince powered home a game-high 31 points and 16 rebounds. Her 31 points are the most in a game by any D1 player vs. a top-25 opponent this season.
Van Lith tallied 18 points – 12 of which came in the second half – and 10 assists to join Prince on the double-double train. She recorded her 2,000th career point in the third quarter, becoming one of just six active D1 players to achieve the milestone.
TCU (4-0) had four players score in double figures. Madison Conner finished with 11 points while Taylor Bigby sprinkled in 10.
The Horned Frogs, who lead the nation in assists per game, dished out 22 dimes against just four turnovers, their fewest in a game under second year head coach Mark Campbell.
TCU led for more than 29 minutes, though the outcome was in doubt until the contest's final play.
The Horned Frogs assumed a 64-52 edge following their first offensive look in the fourth quarter and maintained a multi-possession lead throughout the final frame. TCU led 73-64 with less than four minutes left, only for the Wolfpack (2-2) to use a 10-3 run to trim the deficit to one with 52 seconds to go.
A subsequent turnover gifted NC State a chance to regain the lead. A Wolfpack three rimmed out. On TCU's final possession, Van Lith sucked in two defenders and set Bigby up with a one-on-one on the right key. She pumped and finished a slide by layup via her left hand with eight seconds remaining.
TCU had three fouls to give and whittled the clock down to three seconds. A last-second 3-pointer to tie the game by Aziaha James (27 points, five rebounds) clanged off the backboard as time expired.
The first half featured 11 lead changes, including eight in the opening period.
A late 6-0 spurt staked the Wolfpack to an 18-15 lead after one.
Prince tallied 11 points and four rebounds over the game's first 10 minutes to keep the Frogs in the mix.
A crossover from Van Lith near the 7:00 mark of the second quarter capped an 8-2 TCU run that put the hosts on top, 21-20. NC State again counterpunched, scoring seven of the game's next nine points to go back in front by two possessions.
TCU wrested control of the game for good from there. Down 27-23 with 4:48 to go before halftime, the Horned Frogs ripped off a game-altering 10-1 run over the ensuing three minutes.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Conner and Bigby in a 47-second span flipped the scoreboard to 29-28 Frogs. NC State never led again. Prince increased her first half points tally to 15 off a turnaround jumper from the left baseline on the Frogs' next trip down. Donovyn Hunter found Aaliyah Roberson uncontested down low in transition two possessions later and widened the lead to 33-28 with 1:43 on the clock.
Up two out of the locker room, Conner scored six unanswered and gave TCU its first bit of separation at 39-33. Prince and Van Lith then took over the game. The duo scored 20 of TCU's next 23 points and staked TCU to a double-digit advantage entering the fourth.
Prince shot a career-best 14-24 from the field. She came one rebound shy of matching her career-high on the boards. The 6-7 center continues to lead the nation in blocks with 19. She swatted two shots in the first half.
Van Lith single-handedly finished with more assists than the Wolfpack. TCU limited NC State to just eight assists on 29 field goals, continually forcing the Wolfpack into 3-pointers or contested midrange jumpers.
Her double-double was the sixth of her career and first with double-digit assists. She is averaging 17.3 points, 8 assists, 6.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals per night.
Hunter finished with five assists and just one turnover. She has produced a 16-2 (8.0) assist-to-turnover through four games as TCU's primary ballhandler and ranks in the top-five nationally in the metric.
Bigby scored in double figures for the third straight night. The fourth-year junior has averaged 14.3 points per game in that span.
TCU outrebounded the Wolfpack 40-35. Conner and Bigby finished with six boards apiece. TCU finished with a 42-28 edge in points in the paint.
The Horned Frogs now continue their six-game season-opening homestand at noon on Thursday vs. Incarnate Word.
