FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU forced Washington into 25 turnovers Wednesday night en route to an 86-71 victory over the Huskies inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs, who won for a second-straight game over Washington, improved to 7-0 on the season. With the win, head coach Jamie Dixon is now the only first-year head coach in program history to open a season at 7-0.
The Rundown
The defining stretch of the contest came when the Purple and White went on an 18-0 run in the first half to help erase a 22-5 deficit to start the game. During the run, sophomore Alex Robinson scored nine of the Frogs 18.
On the night, Robinson led the way, scoring a team-high 16 points on 7-of-16 from the field. He also dished out a team-high seven assists, marking the fourth time this season that the Fort Worth native has had five or more assists in a game. Freshman Jaylen Fisher followed with a career-high 15-point outing on 4-of-9. Fisher scored 14 of his 15 in the second half alone Wednesday.
Sophomore JD Miller continued the youth movement, scoring 12 points, while junior Kenrich Williams posted his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Williams just missed his first career triple-double, tallying a season-high six assists Wednesday.
Washington (4-3) was led by Markelle Fultz and Carlos Johnson, respectively. Fultz scored a game-high 21 points, while also grabbing 14 rebounds. Johnson added 13 points on 6-of-13 from the field in the loss.
For the game, TCU, who had 19 assists and only nine turnovers, shot 46.3 percent from the field and held a 30-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
The two teams would open the second half going back and forth, but Miller would give TCU a 37-32 lead at about the 18-minute mark, scoring a jumper off a dish from Robinson. Washington would battle back to pull within 40-35, but Miller would have nothing of it, exploding to the hole for a layup at the 15:49 mark of the second half.
With TCU leading 48-39 midway through the second period, Malique Trent stole the rock and then found Robinson on a run-out to increase the Purple and White advantage to 50-39 with 12:28 on the clock. Moments later, the junior would find pay-dirt off the glass and TCU would take a 54-42 before Desmond Bane rattled home a three at the 10-minute mark.
The Purple and White would take a 68-55 advantage in the game when Fisher nailed a triple from the outside. Miller then recorded another block and watched as Robinson raced to the other end for an old fashion three-point play, which propelled TCU to a 75-58 advantage with 3:42 showing on the clock.
The Frogs coasted the rest of the way, winning for a second-straight game over the Huskies.
Washington would jump out to a 22-5 lead midway through until Williams found Brandon Parrish down low for a contested layup to inch the Frogs closer at the 8:51 mark of the opening frame. A few plays later, Robinson got into the act on consecutive trips, scoring on a finger roll and a triple to make the scoreboard read, 22-11.
By the time Robinson rattled home a triple with a little over 5 minutes remaining in the period, TCU had stormed out to an 18-0 run to take a 23-22 lead in the opening frame of play. The two teams would go back and forth the rest of the half until Miller buried a triple from the corner to propel TCU to a 32-29 advantage down the stretch, which the Frogs would take into halftime.
