FORT WORTH, Texas - A strong second half propelled TCU to a 79-60 victory over Jacksonville State Friday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Rundown
In the second stanza of action, the Horned Frogs, who improved to 3-0 on the young season, could not be stopped on the offensive end of the court, shooting a blistering 57.7 percent from the field, including 60 percent from deep for the half. For the game, TCU shot 50 percent from the field, while connecting on a season-high 11 three-pointers Friday night. TCU also out-rebounded the Gamecocks to the tune of 34-26 and held a 31-12 advantage in points off the bench.
Playing in his 100th career game, senior Brandon Parrish led TCU, scoring a game and season-high 20 points on a career-high 8-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-6 from deep. In the second half alone, the Arlington native hit back-to-back three's, which helped the Frogs put the game out of reach. Freshman Desmond Bane was also in double-figures for a third-straight game with 14 points on 6-of-9 from the field. He also grabbed a team and career-high seven boards in the win. Sophomore Alex Robinson closed out the Horned Frog notables with 10 points and a team-high five assists.
Jacksonville State, now 1-3 on the year, was led on the night by Malcolm Drumwright's 19 points, while Norbertas Giga and Erik Durham tallied 11 points apiece, respectively.
The Gamecocks would tie it at 35-35, but the Horned Frogs would answer with two-straight threes from Parrish to halt the Gamecock attack and give TCU a 42-35 lead with 17:45 on the clock. A few plays later, Williams got into the act from deep to make the scoreboard read 45-37 in favor of the Purple and White.
With TCU up 55-43 midway through the second frame of play, Parrish scored his 20th points of the night, knocking in a jumper at about the 10-minute mark. The Horned Frogs would blow the game wide-open on a 7-2 run to make it 66-48 in favor of TCU with 7:25 left to go in the contest. A few plays later, Bane would increase the Purple and White advantage, scoring an old fashioned three-point play, which made the scoreboard read 70-52 down the stretch.
The two teams would open the game going back and forth until Williams found Parrish for a triple at the 16-minute mark of the opening frame to give TCU a 10-7 lead early. Jacksonville State would tie it at 12-12 a few plays later, but the Frogs would fire back and score five-straight, including a put-back by Brodziansky midway through, to make it a 17-12 lead.
With TCU ahead 19-17 at the 7:20 mark, Trent unleashed a deep three to give the Purple and White a 22-17 advantage. He then watched as Shepherd got into the act on the next possession to increase the TCU advantage to seven with 6:37 on the clock.
The Frogs would increase their lead to 27-17 at the charity stripe on an 8-0 run, but Jacksonville State would answer with a three down the stretch to halt the run until Bane tickled the twine from deep to move the TCU advantage to 33-23 with 2:32 left in the first half. The Horned Frogs took a 36-31 lead into the break following a late run by the Gamecocks.
Quote of the Game
TCU Head Coach Jamie Dixon
"I kind of feel like it's starting to come together here piece by piece, but still we don't have the rhythm we want as far as having the right personnel out there every day. We're still trying to piece it together. Kenrich Williams is running some things he hadn't run in practice before, so he's adjusting but getting used to it. Our offense was very good tonight. The biggest emphasis from the day we got here was cutting down on the turnovers, so that's a big point for our guys. Our defense has got to get better."
"I saw some things tonight we hadn't practiced against and hadn't gone against. They're a good offensive team and very well coached. They've got bigs that shoot the ball and we're having a little trouble on that right now because we don't practice against it as much. We've got some room to improve in that area. Our rebounding has got to get better and our numbers are not what we need to have, but our energy and attitude is good."
