FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU pulled within three late in the second half Saturday afternoon, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to South Dakota State at Wilkerson-Greines, 76-67.
The Rundown
With the loss, the Horned Frogs, who saw their 20-game non-conference winning streak snapped, fell to 2-1 on the young season. The Jackrabbits, who are picked to win the Summit League, improved to 4-0.
It was a tale of two halves Saturday as the Frogs put the clamps down on SDSU in the second half to climb their way back into the contest. TCU forced the Jackrabbits into 16 turnovers in second half alone, while limiting them to only 35 percent from the floor during the period.
A 17-1 run, which cut it to six midway through the second half, sparked the Horned Frog attack, but in the end the Frogs couldn't make up the difference in the game despite climbing back to within three twice down the stretch. During the run, the Purple and White forced the Jacks into 10 turnovers and a 0-for-8 showing from the field.
Malique Trent led TCU Saturday with a career-high 18 points. Junior Brandon Parrish followed with 17 points on 5-of-10 from the field. Vladimir Brodziansky was also in double-figures for a third-straight game, tallying 11 points.
Not to be outdone, senior Devonta Abron really sparked the Purple and White off the bench, scoring eight points and corralling a season-high 12 rebounds in the loss.
SDSU opened the second half on a 12-1 run before Trent got going on both ends of the court, swatting away a would be shot and then nailing a triple with 14:10 showing to inch the Frogs closer.
Following the three, TCU would score the next three points to make it a 55-39 ballgame and then watch as Trent scored off a jumper to help the Purple and White climb within 15 midway through the second half.
With the scoreboard reading 56-43 in favor of SDSU at the 10-minute mark, Trent took over, tickling the twine from deep to pull the Frogs within 56-46. TCU would make it a 56-48 game at the charity stripe and the Frogs appeared to be in business.
By the time Brodziansky scored down low at the 8-minute mark, TCU was in the midst of a 17-1 run to make it a 56-50 contest.
TCU would make it a 63-57 game following a Parrish put-back. The junior then tickled the twine from deep a few plays later to pull the Frogs within 63-60 down the stretch.
SDSU was able to make some key free throws down the stretch to put the game on ice.
Brodziansky got the Frogs going early, throwing down a thunderous dunk to increase the TCU lead to 3-0 during the opening stages. The Frogs would push it to 7-2, but SDSU would battle back to tie the game at 7-7.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but the Jackrabbits would take a 15-11 advantage before Abron got into the act and scored on a put-back inside the paint midway through. Both teams would continue on the attack until Parrish ripped a three from the corner to pull TCU within 22-18 at the 9:31 mark of the first half.
With the scoreboard reading 27-19 in slight favor of SDSU, Trent buried a triple to pull the Frogs closer. Chauncey Collins then made it a five-point game at the 7:42 mark connecting on a three, but SDSU rattled off six-straight to go ahead by 10.
TCU continued to battle down the stretch of the opening frame as Michael Williams drove to the hole and scored on a tough layup to make it a 39-30 game with 4:28 showing on the clock.
South Dakota State would take a 43-32 lead into intermission.

Quote of the Game
Trent Johnson
"As a head coach, I always pride myself on being proactive and teaching the guys what's going to happen down the line. Sooner or later they're going to play against guys that are pretty good, which happened today. There's an element of stubbornness with this team, but also an element of guys willing to understand. It's important that the upperclassmen make sure the new guys understand. Once we got going defensively, which I liked, we got some plays in transition."
Brandon Parrish
"In the end, we knew we had to give it everything we had to make a game of it in the second half since we were down by so much. We fought hard, but just came up short in the end."
