TCU Falls Late to No. 15 West Virginia, 78-67

The Horned Frogs, who led by as many as 10 in the contest, came into the game boasting a 13-game win-streak and had matched Oklahoma State's 2001-02 squad for the 10th-best start in conference all-time, but just couldn't make enough plays in the second half despite shooting 42.9 percent from behind the arc. With the loss, the Frogs moved to 13-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12 Conference, while the Mountaineers improved to 13-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
The Frogs had three players score in double-figures with Kyan Anderson leading the way with a game-high 19 points on 4-for-8 from the field, including 11 in the second half alone. Fellow senior Trey Zeigler was just as productive, scoring a season-high 17 points on 4-of-6. He also grabbed six rebounds, while dishing out a team-high four assists. Sophomore Brandon Parrish was the only other Frog in double-figures, scoring 11 points on the night, including 10 in the second half.
West Virginia was carried by Gary Browne, who totaled 16 points, while Devin Williams added 14 points and eight rebounds. Jaysean Paige rounded out the Mountaineer notables, scoring 10 points on 4-for-8
TCU opened the second half on a 5-0 run, but West Virginia would take a 38-37 lead during the opening stages of the period until Zeigler floated to the bucket with 16:08 left for the tip-in. A few plays later, Amric Fields got going, finding the bottom of the net to make it 41-38 in favor of TCU.
West Virginia would battle back to take a 51-45 advantage, but Parrish connected on a floater at the 9:43 mark to inch TCU closer at 51-47. A few plays later, the sophomore ripped the nets for a three-point bucket to make it 54-50, but WVU answered once again on the other end to regain its six-point advantage.
Parrish continued his hot shooting on the offensive end of the court at the 7:58 mark, floating in a jumper to ignite the crowd and pull TCU within two at 56-54. The Arlington native went on a 7-0 run by himself during the stanza, but WVU would go up by 10 off an 8-0 run with 5:58 showing on the scoreboard.
With 5 minutes to go in the game, Anderson started to take over, scoring a floater plus the foul to make it a 64-58 ballgame and then buried a deep triple to pull the Frogs within 66-61 down the stretch. In all, the senior would score eight-straight for TCU late in the contest before Zeigler muscled home a bucket in the paint.
West Virginia clung to a 74-65 lead with 1:42 left before Anderson went back to line for two-straight. That was as close as TCU would come the rest of the way, falling for the first time this season.
Karviar Shepherd got the Frogs rolling right out of the gate, hitting on a turn-around jumper to give TCU an early 2-0 lead. A few plays later, Chris Washburn found pay-dirt and the Frogs were off and running. By the time Anderson tickled the twine from deep at the 17-minute mark, TCU had jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
The two teams would go scoreless the next couple of minutes, but West Virginia would pull within 8-6 at the midway point of the opening frame of play until Hudson Price exploded to the hole and laid it in to give the Frogs a 10-6 lead with 10:34 showing on the clock. During the stretch the Purple and White's relentless defense held WVU scoreless from the field from the 13:51 mark to 9:25 showed on the clock in the first half.
With TCU clinging to a 13-10 lead, Anderson put on an offensive show, driving by his would-be defender, faking one way and then finding the bottom of the net to give the Frogs a 15-10 advantage with 8:22 left to go in the half.
By the time Shepherd scored on an old-fashioned three-point play, TCU had jumped on top 22-10 with a little over six minutes remaining in the opening stanza of action. A few plays later, Zeigler would go coast-to-coast for a layup and the Frogs moved their lead to 27-18 with 4:05 showing on the clock.
West Virginia would cut into the deficit off an 8-2 run, but TCU took a 32-30 lead into halftime.
TCU will next be in action at Kansas State on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. CT.
