SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—TCU dropped a 67-48 decision to UMass Monday in the Frogs' final game at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic held at the MassMutual Center.
TCU fell to 3-2, while UMass remained unbeaten, improving to 4-0. The Frogs have one more contest remaining in the tournament, but it will be played in Fort Worth on Nov. 29 against. USC.
The Frogs struggled mightily on offense all evening against the Minutemen, making only 15-of-57 shots (29.8 percent), while the squad also turned the ball over a season-high 17 times. On the other end of the court, UMass attacked the paint all day long, outscoring the Frogs 38-24 in the paint.
Junior guard Ronnie Moss led TCU with 10 points, but he shot only 3-of-12 from the field. Freshman forward Amric Fields added nine points, while junior guards Hank Thorns and J.R. Cadot totaled seven points each. Cadot equaled the career-high rebounding total he set during Sunday's win against Bradley with a team-high eight boards.
Four Minutemen scored in doubled figures, including guard Anthony Gurley, who scored a game-high 14 points. Javorn Farrell and Freddie Riley gave UMass a lift off the bench with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while forward Sampson Carter added 10.
TCU hung tough against the Minutemen early after a slow start that saw UMass run out to an early 10-2 lead. The Frogs scored 12 of the game's next 14 points to pull on top by two points, 14-12, including four points each by Thorns and Cadot.
The game then quickly turned in UMass favor in the form of a 19-2 run. The Frogs were only able to muster a layup by junior guard Sammy Yeaguer in a stretch of six minutes. The Minutemen eventually built the lead to 17 points at 35-18 before senior guard Greg Hill finished the half with a TCU 3-pointer with only 34 seconds remaining.
UMass dominated the glass in the half to the tune of a 21-14 rebounding advantage that included eight offensive boards, while its dribble-drive offense produced 24 of their 35 first-half points in the paint. TCU helped the squad out with uncharacteristically slopping ball-handling, as the Frogs turned the ball over 12 times in the half, which resulted in nine UMass points.
The Minutemen put the game away for good early in the second half, scoring 14 of the first 16 points in the period for a 49-23 lead. The squad led by as many as 29 points before a late TCU run cut the advantage down to 17 points with about four minutes remaining.
TCU returns to Fort Worth for the Thanksgiving holiday. Following the break, the Frogs play host to in-state rival Houston on Saturday, Nov. 27, at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
