FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second time this season, TCU (10-11, 2-7 MWC) and Utah (8-14, 3-6) locked horns in a wire-to-wire contest, but this time the Utes came out on top, 70-65, Saturday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The two schools split the season series, with each team winning on the road.
It was TCU's second straight defeat in the closing seconds, as the Horned Frogs had the ball down three with 20 seconds left. However, Kevin Langford misfired on a shot inside and Utah was able to seal the game with a pair of free throws with eight seconds left.
TCU trailed by as many as 13, 47-34, with under 16 minutes to play in the second half. However, after a 9-0 TCU spurt from the first media timeout until the next media stoppage, the Frogs were down just four at 47-43.
TCU, however, was unable to get closer than two the rest of the way.
Brent Hackett, who lit up the Utes for 20 points in the earlier meeting this year, finished with a career-high 22. Langford, a fellow Fort Worth native, also established a career high with 21. The two combined to scored 25 of the Horned Frogs' 29 first-half points.
TCU's largest lead of the game was 26-22 after a 9-0 Frog uprising. However, the Utes followed with a 10-0 run of their own over the next two minutes to take a 32-26 lead. Ultimately, TCU trailed 36-29 at the break.
For the game, Utah was 22-for-26 (.846) from the free throw line, while TCU was just 13-for-24 (.542). TCU forced 25 Utah turnovers, but the Utes held the advantage on the glass, 35-23.
TCU is next in action at UNLV on Wednesday. Tip time is set for 9 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised live on CSTV.
