FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's basketball team overcame a seven-point second-half deficit with just over five minutes remaining to defeat Long Beach State 71-68 in overtime Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Lady Frogs led by as many as nine points in the first half. TCU was up 30-21 with 3:44 remaining after a layup by Lorie Butler-Rayford. The 49ers answered with a 7-0 run over the next 2:08, but the Lady Frogs managed to take a 35-30 halftime lead.
TCU's offense began to click in the second half and after leading 38-35 with 18:24 showing on the clock, the Lady Frogs scored nine unanswered over the ensuing 4:10. LBSU responded with a 14-0 tear over a span of 3:07 to grab a two-point lead, 49-47, with 9:50 to go.
Following a three by the 49ers' Mary Has that gave her squad a 64-57 advantage with 5:08 to go, the TCU defense held LSBU to 1-for-6 shooting and forced three turnovers down the stretch. Ashley Davis hit the game-tying shot for the Lady Frogs with 1:10 left off a missed shot from teammate Adrianne Ross. Tied at 66-all, TCU had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Davis' three from the right baseline rimmed in and out.
In OT, LBSU shot just 1-for-7 from the field and missed both of its chances from the free-throw line. Davis hit a trey a minute in and Moneka Knight nailed two charity tosses with 16 seconds left to give the Lady Frogs a three-point lead. Crystal McCutcheon and Karina Figueroa both missed on their attempts from behind the arc to force a second extra session.
The Lady Frogs were led by Butler-Rayford with 19 points and 11 rebounds for her third career double-double. The 19 points also surpassed her career-best of 16 set against Charlotte last season. Vanessa Clementino had 15 points and 13 boards, while Natasha Lacy added 13 points and 10 boards. It was the fourth career double-doubles for both. Davis fell one board shy of a double-double, adding 13 points.
Figueroa was the game's high scorer with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting, and she added 10 assists while playing all 45 minutes of the game. McCutcheon added 16 points and Jayme Connors tossed in a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
TCU shot just 32.9 percent (24-of-73) and was 5-of-27 (.185) on threes. LBSU went 25-for-62 (.403) and connected on 6-of-15 (.400) from long range. The Lady Frogs out-rebounded the 49ers 51-43 and owned a 22-11 edge on the offensive glass. Second chance points were 22-7 in favor of TCU.
The Lady Frogs host No. 8/10 Georgia on Monday at 7 p.m. CST. The 1-1 Lady Bulldogs are coming off a 92-91 victory against Santa Clara.
