Horned Frogs defeat Jayhawks 79-77 to maintain share of first place in Big 12
FORT WORTH – No. 12 TCU saw a 13-point first quarter deficit whittled down to a single possession three times but found a way to hold off Kansas 79-77 on Thursday at Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (21-2, 8-1 Big 12) hit their first seven field goals and began the game 6-6 from field en route to a 30-17 head start after 10 minutes. Kansas gradually clawed its way back into the ballgame and opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run to trim TCU's lead to 67-65 with 3:58 remaining.
TCU hit its final four field goals to stymie the Jayhawks' upset bid.
Olivia Miles countered Kansas' run with a three-point play on TCU's next possession. Clara Bielefeld then knocked down a 3-pointer from the left baseline to keep TCU on top 73-67 at the two-minute marker of the fourth. Consecutive midrange jumpers by Veronica Sheffey and Miles put TCU up by five points with 18 seconds to go and looked to be the dagger.
But two missed free throws and a 3-pointer by Kansas' S'Mya Nichols with one second on the clock put what initially looked to be a wire-to-wire win in jeopardy. Sheffey was subsequently whistled for an offensive foul, but the Jayhawks (13-9, 3-7 Big 12) were unable to get a shot off as time expired.
TCU maintained a tie for first place in the Big 12 standings with No. 14 Baylor at the midpoint of conference play with the victory. The Horned Frogs also extended their NCAA-leading home winning streak to 38 games.
The Horned Frogs managed to win despite seeing three of their five starters foul out in the final frame. Marta Suarez and Clara Silva were flagged for offensive fouls within 30 seconds of one another midway through the period with TCU ahead 67-61. Miles then exited the game with 11 seconds remaining.
TCU also overcame 53 combined points from Jaliya Davis and Nichols. Davis led all players with 29 points – the most in a game by a freshman this season vs. a top 25 team – and nine rebounds.
Both teams finished 28-56 from the field but revved their offensive engines in different ways. TCU connected on 10-20 attempts from distance whereas the Jayhawks chewed up the Horned Frogs inside to the tune of 46 points in the paint and 19 at the charity stripe.
On a day she celebrated her 23rd birthday, Miles tallied a team-high 20 points and led all players with six assists. The 5-10 guard led TCU in scoring for the eighth straight game and notched her eighth 20-point performance in her last 11 starts.
Donovyn Hunter netted 15 points and was buoyed by a trio of first quarter 3-pointers.
Suarez was on her way to a double-double, tallying 13 points and eight boards before departing the contest prematurely.
The Frogs' first seven field goals were all assisted on. TCU dished out 10 dimes in the opening frame – four of which came from Miles – and recorded 17 for the game.
Bielefeld scored a season-high nine points over 13 minutes. She was 3-3 from the field and twice connected from behind the arc. The 6-4 freshman snapped an 8-2 Kansas run with 4:12 to go before halftime with her first 3-pointer, giving TCU a 38-29 edge.
Sheffey chipped in six points off the bench.
TCU finished with a 22-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
