
Suarez's Buzzer-Beater Sends No. 10 TCU Past West Virginia

Horned Frogs escape Morgantown with 51-50 win
MORGANTOWN, W. Va – Marta Suarez buried a buzzer-beating 3-pointer and No. 10 escaped West Virginia with a 51-50 win over the Mountaineers on Wednesday at Hope Coliseum.
Trailing 50-48 with 2.8 seconds remaining, Suarez slipped to the top of the key on an inbounds play, jabbed with her right foot and sunk a step back three from the top of the key as time expired.
It was a crucial victory for the Horned Frogs, who last won in Morgantown in 2020. TCU (17-1, 5-1 Big 12) stayed within a game of first place in the Big 12 standings and booted the Mountaineers from a cluster of one-loss teams in league play.
Suarez was 3-18 from the field before she sunk the game-winner. TCU shot 36 percent collectively. TCU managed to win despite finishing with season lows in points and assists (five) and a season-high 24 turnovers.
Ultimately, it was the Frogs' defensive prowess that salvaged the game. TCU held the Mountaineers to just 28 percent shooting (15-53), only one 3-pointer and forced 23 giveaways, the program's most ever in a Big 12 road game.
The Horned Frogs led 29-15 with 2:28 remaining in the first half but went more than eight minutes without putting points on the board between the second and third quarters. West Virginia (14-4, 4-2 Big 12) tallied 16 unanswered points to take its first lead of the night at the five-minute mark in the third.
TCU trailed 49-46 with 11 seconds remaining after the Mountaineers scored on consecutive possessions. Donovyn Hunter nearly converted a three-point play but sunk both free throws. Forced to foul with three seconds on the clock, TCU put West Virginia guard Jordan Harrison, who led all players with 19 points, on the line. Harrison, though, misfired on her first of two attempts, setting the scene for Suarez's heroics.
Olivia Miles led TCU in scoring for the fourth straight game, pairing 14 points on the strength of a 4-7 clip from downtown with six rebounds.
Suarez finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
The unsung hero in the game was Veronica Sheffey, who netted all eight of her points in the second half, including six in the final frame.
The 5-9 senior snapped TCU's prolonged scoring drought in the third and twice regained the lead for TCU in the fourth. The Frogs broke the Mountaineers full court press out of the media timeout. and found Sheffey under the basket to go on top 44-43. Sheffey then fought through two defenders and finished a layup with 1:20 to go and gave the Frogs a 46-45 edge.
TCU raced out to a 12-4 lead late in the first quarter and rattled off 10 straight points early in the second to go in front 22-10. Miles' third 3-poitner of the first half stretched TCU's advantage to 25-11 with 5:50 left before halftime.
In addition to the turnovers, TCU's struggles to close quarters allowed West Virginia to stay in the game. The Mountaineers outscored TCU by a combined 14-4 margin in the final 2:00 of the first three frames. West Virginia closed the first half on an 8-0 run.
The Mountaineers had 24 free throw attempts compared to only six for the Horned Frogs.
