FORT WORTH – Clara Silva is the latest TCU player to step onto the global stage, as the center will represent her native Portugal at the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup in Brno, Czechia.
A rising sophomore, Silva becomes the third Horned Frog to compete for a national team this summer.
The 16-team event runs from July 12-20 and is a showcase of the sport's rising stars. All games will stream live on fiba.basketball and the FIBA YouTube channel.
Silva and Team Portugal begin play at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday vs. Canada. Portugal was drawn into Group B and follows the opener with tilts opposite China and Nigeria on Sunday and Tuesday. The knockout stage commences on Wednesday. Teams from Group A and Group B face off in the round of 16 with seeds determined by results in the group phase. All participating teams will play seven games to determine their final positions.
Standing 6-7, Silva is regarded as the best player in the Portuguese Basketball Federation. She was tabbed the No. 9 overall prospect in the field by FIBA Basketball in advance of the tournament.
Silva has been a member of the Portuguese national team system since 2021. The Women's World Cup is her sixth FIBA championship. She averaged a team-high 18.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game at the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket in her most recent international competition, leading Portugal to a fifth-place finish. Silva has also competed for Portugal's U20 team and was in final contention for a spot on the senior national team roster at the FIBA Women's EuroBasket in June. She has averaged 11.6 points and eight rebounds per game across 33 career outings with youth national teams.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Silva is a cornerstone piece of the Frogs' future. She transferred to TCU in April after playing her freshman season at Kentucky. Silva saw action in all 31 games in her first taste of college basketball, helping the Wildcats earn a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. She averaged 4.0 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks across 12.5 minutes per game. Silva logged at least 10 minutes in 19 contests. She was graded a top-10 prospect at her position in the class of 2024 by various recruiting outlets. Silva played professionally for three seasons for Unicaja in the Spain-LF Challenge league before transitioning to college basketball.
