Cross Country opens 2024 season at AP Ranch
FORT WORTH – Opening its season at home for the second straight season, TCU cross country hosts the second annual John McKenzie Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31, at AP Ranch. The collegiate women's 5K is slated to begin at 7:45 a.m. CT with the men's 5K to follow at 8:15 a.m.
Hosted at AP Ranch in Fort Worth, the season-opening meet will honor John McKenzie and his legacy in the DFW area. McKenzie coached at TCU and North Texas from 1971-1996 and has been a staple in DFW track and field. A 1964 graduate of TCU, McKenzie was a letterwinner in track and field during his time as a student-athlete.
"If you were to talk to anyone that's connected to TCU cross country and track and field in the past 30 or 40 years, he's had an influence on all of them," Director of Track and Field Khadevis Robinson said. "He is so involved and connected, and it's an honor to recognize him this way."
The Horned Frogs look to kick off their season in Funky Town with strong result. Last year, both the men and women secured a second-place finish at the event held at AP Ranch. The 2024 roster boasts a balance of returners and new faces. Graydon Morris and Tabitha Ngao are set to anchor their respective squads after strong 2023 campaigns.
Nago returns following a stellar freshman season in which she won her first two collegiate races. She is joined by Olivia Andrews and Gabby Martin, who ran for the Frogs in the postseason, among six other returners. TCU will however be tasked with replacing Gracie Morris, the only NCAA Individual Qualifier for the Horned Frogs since 2016. It aims to do so with the addition of transfer Peyten Woodruff and four freshmen who are eager to contribute.
On the men's side a strong core led by Morris, Stone Burke and Noah Winters return for one final lap. The senior trio combined for six top 10 finishes a year ago. In total, the Frogs return eight runners from last season and welcome a pair over from the track in Johnson Lagat and Hector Solis. Four freshmen also look to factor into the mix for TCU giving the Frogs plenty of depth.
