Miller leads the Frogs with 18 points
AMES, Iowa – Emanuel Miller led all players with 18 points, but the TCU men's basketball team had trouble against a stout defense in a 71-59 loss at No. 14 Iowa State Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
Miller scored the games' first points, a 3-pointer, for his 600th career made field goal. Trevian Tennyson followed with a 3-pointer to go up 6-4, but that was the Horned Frogs' (16-7, 5-5) last lead of the game and their last scoring for a while.
Boasting one of the top defenses in the nation, the Cyclones (18-5, 7-3) held the Frogs scoreless for seven minutes. During that time, they forced TCU into four turnovers and outscored the Frogs, 13-0.
Iowa State led 30-22 at the half. It was TCU's fewest points in a half this season after shooting 30.8 percent.
The Horned Frogs fared better in the second half, shooting 57.7 percent from the field, but so did the Cyclones at 53.8 percent.
Iowa State led by as many as 17 points, 49-32, with 12:56 to play. TCU responded with 10-straight points, five by Miller, to cut it to 49-42 with 9:58 remaining.
Miller also got TCU to within eight points of the lead three minutes later after a put-back on a blocked Chuck O'Bannon Jr. shot. TCU trailed 57-48 with 6:16 to play.
The Frogs did not get any closer. Proving to be the difference in the game were free throws. The Cyclones made the most of their trips to the free throw line, making 15-of-18 for 83.3 percent, while the Frogs were 8-of-16 for 50 percent.
JaKobe Coles joined Miller in double figures with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range.
TCU will next host West Virginia on Monday at 7 p.m. on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
