Frogs outscore Bears 45-22 in the second half; extend home winning streak to 13
FORT WORTH – No. 11 TCU closed out nonconference play and the 2024 calendar year with an all-too-familiar and friendly sight; a convincing victory inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs battled past Brown 79-47 on Sunday afternoon.
TCU outscored the Bears 45-22 in the second half, transforming what was a nine-point game at halftime into a comfortable win. The Horned Frogs snagged 54 rebounds – their second-most in a game under head coach Mark Campbell – and limited Brown to 10 field goals inside the arc.
The Frogs improved to 13-1 ahead of a 6:30 p.m. tilt on New Year's Day opposite Big 12 newcomer Colorado (10-2, 1-0 Big 12). TCU won its 13th consecutive home game and extended its home nonconference winning streak to 23 with the result.
Three players scored in double figures for TCU. Hailey Van Lith led all players with 17 points. Madison Conner scored 14 on the strength of four 3-pointers. Conner, the reigning U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Week, drilled four of her first five looks from downtown. Taylor Bigby netted 11, her fifth time in double figures this season.
Guards Agnes Emma-Nnopu and Donovyn Hunter accounted for 21 of TCU's boards, with Emma-Nnopu snagging a career-high 14 for the third time as a Frog. Five of Emma-Nnopu's rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Brown (6-7) sat atop the scoreboard for more than five minutes of the first period. The Bears knocked down four consecutive 3-pointers to begin the game and led 14-10 with 3:15 to go.
TCU held Brown without a field goal for the ensuing 7:40. The Horned Frogs threaded a 19-2 run between the first and second quarters and assumed a 29-16 edge with 3:03 to go in the half. TCU scored seven unanswered points to close the first quarter, five of which came from Hunter (8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists). Conner and Emma-Nnopu combined for 11 of TCU's points in the second.
The Horned Frogs, who average 21 assists per game, entered the locker room with just three. TCU started the game 6-20 from the field.
Any signs of rust from an extended Christmas holiday evaporated, though, in the third. TCU shot 58 percent (11-19) and assisted on eight of its field goals to take a 22-point lead into the final frame.
TCU padded its margin of victory with a 7-0 run over the final 2:07.
Sedona Prince scored all nine of her points in the second half. The 6-7 center also tallied seven rebounds and three blocks.
The Horned Frogs began the game 1-6 from deep but converted down 10 of their final 21 three-point attempts.
TCU produced a plus-26 margin (54-28) on the glass, its second-best this season.
Brown's 47 points were its fewest in a game all year. TCU limited the Bears to a season-low 29 percent shooting clip (18-57).
