Conner leads all scorers with 20 points
FORT WORTH – No. 23 TCU dropped its first home decision of the 2023-24 season, falling 67-59 to Oklahoma State on Saturday in Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (14-2, 1-2 Big 12) cut a 14-point halftime deficit down to two at 50-48 with 9:18 remaining in the game. TCU was held without a field goal the rest of the way. The Frogs, who shot 29.8 percent from the field, converted just eight looks inside the arc throughout the evening.
The struggles from the field stemmed in large part from the injury bug. TCU was dealt a blow ahead of tipoff with the announcement that center Sedona Prince (21.2 ppg, 10.6 rpg) will be sidelined for the coming weeks with a hand injury.
DaiJa Turner slotted in at the five in place of the two-time Big 12 Player of the Week. Turner converted an and-one putback to pull the Horned Frogs within a possession to begin the fourth quarter. She led all players on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds – five offensive – over 26 minutes.
Madison Conner tallied a game-leading 20 points, marking the eighth time she has scored 20-or-more this season.
Jaden Owens added a TCU career-high 19 points to pair with six assists.
Conner and Owens accounted for 33 of TCU's 57 attempts from the field.
TCU led for just 1:28 in the contest. Oklahoma State began the game 5-7 from the field. The Cowgirls (9-5, 2-1 Big 12) opened up a 21-12 lead two minutes into the second period.
Conner did her best to will TCU back into the contest. The Big 12's leading scorer, Conner tallied eight consecutive points for TCU midway through the quarter via two deep balls and a pair of free throws. Conner's offensive spark cut the deficit down to seven. Oklahoma State responded with five unanswered points before closing the half on a 6-0 run en route to a 39-25 halftime lead.
TCU outscored the Cowgirls 20-10 in the third quarter to pull within four points entering the final frame. The Horned Frogs went 8-13 from the field and converted four looks behind the arc.
A pair of free throws from Conner at the 7:28 mark of the fourth quarter made the affair a two possession game at 55-51. TCU then endured nearly a four-and-a-half-minute scoring drought, allowing Oklahoma State to regain a double-digit advantage.
TCU was out-rebounded 44-33 in the absence of Prince and was pestered into 15 turnovers.
The Horned Frogs finished 16-19 at the charity stripe. Owens went 7-8 at the line while Conner was a perfect 6-6.
