Horned Frogs have now defeated 11 ranked teams in 2023
FORT WORTH – The start time shifted, and the match format was altered, yet disruptions proved moot for No. 3 TCU on Sunday.
The Horned Frogs cruised to their third consecutive home shutout on the Bartzen Varsity Courts, taking out No. 34 Oklahoma State in Big 12 action 4-0 via a quartet of singles victories.
Forecasted thunderstorms bumped first serve from 2:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. The match was contested as clinch and commenced with singles play as opposed to doubles due to the impending weather.
"The boys got it done against Oklahoma State," head coach David Roditi said. "Very well-coached team, great sportsmanship, always a good battle with them. I felt our team handled the last-minute changes to beat the rain really well. The guys showed up and played really good tennis, very disciplined tennis. I was really proud. We got the win at No. 1. Jake [Fearnley] beat one of the better players in the country. Then, we won at the bottom with Sebastian [Gorzny] and Pedro [Vives] clinching it, and also Sander Jong at No. 4, first one off the court. Really well-done. Now, we get to play our last regular season home match on Thursday. I hope to see you all. It's Senior Day. We'll celebrate Sander Jong and Luc Fomba. They've been a huge part of our program. Thursday against Baylor at 6 o'clock. Go Frogs."
TCU (18-1) notched its third straight 2-0 start to conference play with the shutout of the Cowboys (12-8, 0-2 Big 12). The Horned Frogs are tied for first with No. 1 Texas (18-2, 2-0 Big 12) with three matches separating TCU from the Big 12 Tournament, which runs from Apr. 21-23 in Lawrence, Kansas.
It was clear from the outset that the doubles point would not be necessary. TCU claimed the opening frame on every court and dropped just one set all dual. The Horned Frogs concluded the match with comfortable leads on the pair of unfinished courts.
Jong, No. 43 in the ITA singles rankings, staked TCU to its first point courtesy of a 6-2, 6-4 win at the expense of Oklahoma State's Alex Garcia.
Fearnley followed with his team-leading 13th ranked singles victory of 2022-2023 vs. Tyler Zink in a respective battle of the nation's 21st and 90th ranked singles players. Fearnley earned a 6-3, 6-2 decision to boost TCU's advantage to 2-0. He closed both sets by winning four straight games.
The 71st-ranked Gorzny then put the Horned Frogs within a point of the clinch, grinding out a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Francisco Pini on court five. Gorzny fell behind 0-3 in the opening set and trailed as late as 4-5. He took the lead for good in set two at 3-2.
Vives sealed the shutout with his second match-clincher in as many outings in the sixth flight vs. Alessio Basile. The sophomore took set one 6-2, then rallied out of a 0-4 hole in the second set to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. Vives won the tiebreaker 7-2, punctuating the win and waving off the action on the remaining courts.
Jack Pinnington led 6-4, 5-4 against Isaac Becroft on court two. He was on serve and up 30-15 when play was paused.
Fomba, TCU's highest ranked singles player at No. 16, was two games and mere minutes shy of joining the winner's circle. He was ahead 4-2 in set three vs. Chase Ferguson after splitting the first two sets 6-2, 3-6.
TCU has now shut out 11 opponents and downed an equal number of ranked teams in 2023. Sunday's clean scoresheet was the Horned Frogs' third in as many outings. They are outscoring opponents 34-5 on the outdoor courts.
