Horned Frogs earn third win over the Bears in 2023 with 4-0 victory
FORT WORTH – All Luc Fomba and Sander Jong have done since first arriving in Fort Worth from Europe five years ago is win, and for one final time, they stood before a home crowd as victors.
Playing their final true home dual as Horned Frogs, the fifth year seniors won both their singles and doubles matches to lead No. 2 TCU to a 4-0 conference triumph over No. 41 Baylor on Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Fomba and Jong, who have now led TCU to 98 victories, were honored with Senior Night tributes after clinching the doubles point. Fomba and Fearnley, No. 4 in the ITA doubles team, downed the 20th-ranked tandem of Finn Bass and Juampi Mazzuchi 6-3, before Jong and Lui Maxted bettered Christopher Frantzen and Justin Braverman 6-4.
Following a 6-2, 6-0 walloping of Frantzen by Pedro Vives in singles, Fomba and Jong solidified the win with sweeps on courts three and four, respectively. Fomba rolled over Mazzuchi 6-3, 6-1, setting up Jong for the match-clincher, which he attained via a 6-3, 6-0 rout of Ethan Muza.
"Great atmosphere," head coach David Roditi said. "I thought there was going to be no one here because of how cold it was. Great crowd. What a way to celebrate our seniors. Baylor – I hope they get healthy. They had two-or-three guys out, so not their full squad. Nevertheless, today was about celebrating our seniors. Luc and Sander, both won their doubles, and both won their singles, so happy for them and everything they've done for this program. We'll take the win and now get ready for Texas Tech in Lubbock. One of the toughest matches of the year. We'll be ready. Go Frogs."
TCU (19-1, 3-0 Big 12) notched its third victory in as many attempts vs. Baylor (14-12, 1-1 Big 12) this season with the result. The Horned Frogs defeated their central Texas rival twice in February by an 8-1 combined margin of victory on their way to the ITA Indoor National Championships.
Thursday's runaway, though, was the most convincing of the three victories. Outside of 6-3 doubles defeat on court two, TCU was never threatened. The Horned Frogs won all nine completed singles sets and 11-of-12 overall for the match. TCU claimed the opening frame in singles on all six courts and later led 4-0 in set two in the first, fourth and sixth flights.
The Horned Frogs also exorcised a dubious demon from its system, snapping a three-match home losing streak to the Bears.
TCU moved to 11-1 at home in 2023, with nine of the victories scored as shutouts. The Horned Frogs also improved their record vs. opponents presently featured in the ITA team rankings to 17-1
