Horned Frogs head west to face Texas Tech following dual with the Bears
FORT WORTH – The penultimate week in the regular season for No. 2 TCU men's tennis is nigh, and with it arrive a pair of familiar foes in Baylor and Texas Tech.
The Horned Frogs (18-1, 2-0 Big 12) are set to host the 41st-ranked Bears at 6 p.m. on Thursday on the Bartzen Varsity Courts. TCU then makes the 350-mile trek west to meet the Red Raiders, ranked 37th in the latest ITA poll, at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Though Big 12 play commenced last week, TCU has thrice collided with Baylor (14-11, 1-0 Big 12) and Texas Tech (12-7, 0-1 Big 12) already in 2023.
Three of the Horned Frogs' 12 indoor wins came at the expense of the Bears and Red Raiders during their run to a second straight ITA Indoor National championship. TCU blanked Texas Tech 4-0 on Jan. 29 in its ITA Kickoff Weekend Regional Final to punch its ticket to Indoor Nationals. The Horned Frogs then closed out the indoor regular season with a 4-1 win over then-No. 10 Baylor on Feb. 8 in Waco, before downing the Bears 4-0 nine days later in the opening round of Indoor Nationals.
Thursday's dual marks the fourth time the Horned Frogs and Bears have crossed paths in 2022-2023. TCU trekked to Waco in October for the ITA Texas Regional, claiming three-of-four singles or doubles matches involving Baylor. The Horned Frogs have produced a 13-2 combined record (8-1 singles, 5-1 doubles) in their trio of encounters with the Bears. Jake Fearnley and Sebastian Gorzny are both 4-0 combined and 3-0 in singles play vs. their green and gold clad counterparts.
TCU has surrendered just two singles and doubles sets to the Red Raiders between the ITA Texas Regional and their January meeting. The Horned Frogs are 42-6 all-time and 13-3 under Roditi vs. Texas Tech. TCU's 42 victories at the expense of the Red Raiders are its most vs. any opponent in school history. The program has claimed nine consecutive contests vs. Texas Tech, including three straight in Lubbock.
The weekend two-step will go a long way in determining the Big 12 regular season champion. TCU is tied for first in the conference standings with No; 1 Texas (18-2, 2-0 Big 12). A sweep of the Bears and Red Raiders, paired with a Longhorn loss to either opponent, would guarantee TCU a share of the Big 12 regular season title. The Horned Frogs claimed the crown in three straight and five of the last six seasons.
Thursday's tilt with the Bears is TCU's final regular season home match. The Horned Frogs will hold senior night tributes for fifth year seniors Luc Fomba and Sander Jong during an intermission between doubles and singles. Fomba and Jong have served as team captains over the last two seasons. Since touching down in Fort Worth in 2018, the duo has helped account for 97 Horned Frog victories, three quarterfinal appearances in the NCAA Tournament, a trio of Big 12 regular season titles and the first-ever ITA Indoor National Championships in program history.

Protect the Purple
The Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center is arguably the toughest venue in the nation for opposing teams to compete at. TCU has amassed a 105-12 (.897) record on the purple courts since 2015. Of the 105 victories, 67 have come at the expense of ranked opponents. Under head coach David Roditi, the Horned Frogs have posted a remarkable 145-36 (.801) home record.
On the Road Again
Nearly two years have passed since TCU dropped an away dual.
The Horned Frogs' 4-1 victory at No. 10 Baylor on Feb. 8 extended the program's road winning streak to 10, dating back to the 2020-21 season.
TCU notched a perfect 7-0 record in away matches in 2022.
The Horned Frogs' last road defeat came in the Big 12 Tournament Championship at Baylor on Apr. 25, 2021.
Consistency is Key
The Horned Frogs are the lone NCAA Division I men's tennis program to have maintained a top-three ITA team ranking in 2023. TCU has sat atop the rankings five times and boasted the No. 2 or No. 3 ranking in seven polls (five indoor, two outdoor).
Chasing Down 200
Luc Fomba, TCU's active leader in career combined victories, is 14 wins shy of reaching 200. Since arriving in Fort Worth in 2018, he has tallied 153 combined victories in duals over five spring seasons and sprinkled in an additional 33 in fall invitationals. When Fomba tallies career win No. 200, he will become the first player in 26 years to achieve the milestone and ascend to ninth on TCU's career combined victories list.
Fomba's year-by-year combined records are as follows:
2018-2019: 32-20 (21-7 singles / 11-13 doubles)
2019-2020: 32-12 (19-8 singles / 13-4 doubles)
2020-2021: 42-22 (22-9 singles / 20-13 doubles)
2021-2022: 48-16 (23-8 singles / 25-8 doubles)
2022-2023: 32-6 (17-3 singles / 15-4 doubles)
Jong Nears 150th Spring Season Victory
Ahead of Thursday's, Sander Jong is 10 victories away from joining Fomba as one of two players in TCU's Big 12 era to win 150 combined dual victories. Jong owns a combined spring record of 139-65 (70-30 singles, 70-35 doubles) and boasts 172 career victories (83 doubles, 79 singles) when factoring in results from team sponsored fall invitationals.
Say it Ain't so, Seb
As of Tuesday, Apr. 4, five years and two weeks have passed since TCU last dipped outside the top-25 of the ITA team rankings. The Horned Frogs have spent 267 straight weeks in the top-25 of the ITA team rankings, a streak matched by few other Division I programs.
The streak began on March 21, 2018, when TCU skyrocketed from No. 32 to No. 11 following three straight wins over No. 17 Duke (March 13), No. 12 Florida (March 14) and No. 9 Columbia (March 18)
The trio of top-20 wins ignited a 12-match winning streak to close the regular season. The Horned Frogs concluded the 2016-17 season with a 20-5 overall record and No. 9 final ITA team ranking.
Since then, TCU has spent just one week outside the top-20 of the ITA team rankings.
