ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – TCU matched its best start to a season in program history and has a trophy to show for it.
The Horned Frogs fought off Nebraska 88-81 on Saturday inside the McArthur Center to win the St. Pete Showcase championship.
TCU is now 7-0 for the second time in its 47-year history. The Horned Frogs last rattled off seven straight wins to start a season in 2019-20. They'll have a chance to top the mark when the team returns home to face Tulsa (4-1) on Friday.
Sedona Prince was crowned tournament MVP following the final horn. She collected her NCAA-leading fifth double-double to send the Horned Frogs past the Cornhuskers. Prince finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. She tallied 17 of her points in the second half. Prince salted away the win behind a 6-6 mark at the foul line over the final 37 seconds of the ballgame.
Equally invaluable in the win was Agnes Emma-Nnopu, who was one of five players to receive all-tournament team accolades. Emma-Nnopu torched Nebraska (5-2) for 20 first half points behind a 6-8 clip from long range. The senior led all scorers with 26 points to pair with seven rebounds.
Emma-Nnopu's first half outburst propelled TCU to a 45-25 halftime lead. She canned three of her deep balls over the first five minutes of the game. Her third 3-pointer capped an 8-0 scoring run and gave TCU an early 17-8 edge.
The Stanford transfer then staked the Horned Frogs to their first double-digit lead at 21-11 with 1:21 left in the frame after snagging an offensive board and powering home an easy lay-in.
TCU pounded Nebraska on the boards all half long. The Horned Frogs exited the opening frame with a 14-4 advantage in rebounds, with seven of their rebounds coming on the offensive glass. TCU outrebounded the Cornhuskers 25-15 over the first 20 minutes.
Back-to-back triples by Emma-Nnopu at the 4:52 mark of the second quarter ballooned TCU's edge to 39-20. A pump-and-go from Aaliyah Roberson three minutes later gave the Horned Frogs their first 20-point lead of the afternoon at 43-23.
Roberson scored seven of her career-high 15 points in the first half.
Prince's presence inside enabled TCU to fend off a furious second half charge by Nebraska. The 6-7 center pocketed seven points in the third quarter to keep the Frogs up eight at 64-56 entering the final period. Nebraska, which shot 12-19 from the field in the frame, used an 11-2 run late in the quarter to get within eight points of TCU.
The Cornhuskers scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut TCU's lead down to 66-61. Prince and Roberson, though, promptly restored order, teaming up on a 7-0 run. Prince bookended a pair of layups through double teams around a Roberson 3-pointer that gave TCU a 73-61 cushion and forced Nebraska to whistle for time with 5:52 remaining.
Madison Conner's first 3-pointer of the afternoon arrived 70 seconds later and made the score 76-63.
Conner, the NCAA leader in 3-pointers, chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.
TCU converted eight of nine attempts from the charity stripe over the final 42 seconds to sew up the win.
The Horned Frogs committed a season-low seven turnovers, with Jaden Owens playing all 40 minutes at point guard. Owens finished with six points and assists apiece and pulled in four first-half rebounds.
