Horned Frogs are 8-0 for the first time ever; defeat Tulsa 82-50
FORT WORTH – The 2023-24 TCU women's basketball team stands alone.
TCU blasted Tulsa 82-50 on Friday in Schollmaier Arena and earned the best start to a season in its 47-year existence.
The Horned Frogs are 8-0 for the first time ever. TCU matched the second-longest winning streak in program history with Friday's rout and is riding its first eight-game winning streak since 2018-19.
Friday's milestone victory was authored by perhaps the greatest offensive performance TCU has borne witness to.
Madison Conner single-handedly accounted for half of the Horned Frogs' scoring output. The 5-11 guard poured in 41 points behind a 10-15 clip from downtown.
Conner's 41 points were the most in a single game in regulation in program history and rank second all-time, behind only Emily Carter's 43 in a double overtime victory over SMU on Nov. 17, 2010. Conner was one deep ball shy of matching TCU's single-game record for 3-pointers.
Her 10 three-pointers were also tied for the most in a game by any player this season. Her 41 points were the third-most in a game across the D1 ranks.
She pocketed 25 of her points and drained seven 3-pointers in the second half.
The junior scored 14 consecutive points between the second and third quarters, transforming what was a nip-and-tuck affair through the first 15 minutes into a rout. Conner canned consecutive 3-pointers over a 35-second spurt and staked TCU to a 37-23 lead with 41 seconds remaining in the first half.
She collected her fourth triple of the evening on TCU's first possession out of the intermission and promptly converted an and-one the following trip down the court to swell the lead to 43-25. Conner later gave TCU a 20-point lead it never relinquished at 52-32 at the 3:48 mark of the period off a floater near the restricted area.
The sharpshooter then bagged back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to open the final frame and boost her points tally to 35. Conner's previous career-high was 30, a mark she hit in TCU's season-opening win vs. Oral Roberts on Nov. 6.
She hit double figures and eclipsed the 40-point threshold via two more long balls under the five-minute mark. Head coach Mark Campbell, well on his way to becoming the winningest first-year head coach the program has produced, allowed Conner to shoot for the single-game scoring record and attempt a final 3-pointer that rimmed out with 25 seconds to go.
Conner was credited on most of her makes from downtown by Jaden Owens, who collected a TCU career-best 11 assists over a game-high 37 minutes. Owens dished out four assists apiece in the first and fourth quarters.
Sedona Prince gave TCU two scorers in double figures behind a 15-point, eight-rebound performance.
Conner and Prince have both reached double digits in scoring in every game this season.
The duo earned TCU the distinction of being one of just two teams in the country with two 20 point per game scorers.
The other? Tulsa, though that will change following a daily update of NCAA college women's basketball statistical database.
TCU held Temira Poindexter (23.3 ppg) and Delanie Crawford (20 ppg) to 15 and 11 points, respectively. Poindexter scored 11 straight points over the game's first five minutes to keep the Golden Hurricane (5-3) within two points of the Horned Frogs. TCU held Tulsa's leading scorer to just two points and five attempts from the field over the final three quarters.
The Horned Frogs finished with a 40-31 edge on glass. TCU scored 20 points off turnovers compared to zero for Tulsa.
TCU now aims to secure the program's second-longest winning streak ever when it hosts Abilene Christian at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The midweek tilt continues a seven-game homestand that spans the remainder of 2023.
