Horned Frogs win the National Championship for the first time in school history
SEATTLE, Wash. – No. 4 TCU men's tennis (12-1) has won the 2022 ITA Team Indoor National Championship. The Horned Frogs defeated No. 3 Tennessee (11-2), 4-1, inside the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash, to collect their first-ever national championship.
"Special day," head coach David Roditi said. "Not just for our players, but our alumni, our Frog Family, this title means a lot. I'm super excited that our players were actually able to get that title. I feel very fortunate as a coach and very thankful to be in this situation. Our coaching staff, Devin Bowen and Derek Siddiqui have been locked in all weekend. It took a true team effort, not just today, but all weekend long. One thing that we talked about from our match vs. Texas was to emphasize closing it out. Never ever think take leads for granted. For Pedro to stay the course and keep playing when he saw Lui serving for the match or Fomba up a set, he never stopped playing and that was awesome. Great performances by our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairs again, they've been so good all week. Sander had a huge win again. And for our freshman, Pedro, to get it done on this stage shows a lot about his mental toughness and experience as a tennis player. This one's for Coach Bartzen. This one is for all the coaches and all the alumni that have put their blood, sweat and tears into our program for us to get to this moment. I'm ecstatic. Go Frogs!"
This was TCU's 10th win in a row and seventh straight over a ranked opponent, the longest winning streak against ranked opponents since 2018. Eight of TCU's 12 victories this season have come against Top 20 ranked programs and four have come against Top 5-ranked opponents.
The Horned Frogs won the doubles point with wins from the top two pairings: No. 1 – Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley and No. 2 – Sander Jong and Lui Maxted. Jong and Maxted secured a break to go in front, 4-2, before holding serve to win their match. After Tennessee took the match on three, it was up to Fomba and Fearnley to come through. The top pairing held serve to put their score at 5-4, before breaking Tennessee's serve to win the match, 6-4 and clinch the point for TCU.
In singles, TCU got off to a hot start, winning four first sets and putting Tennessee back on its heels. Fearnley finished off his match at No. 5 with ease, taking down No. 114 Mitsui in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. His quick victory kept TCU in control of the match, up 2-0. After a quick first set victory, Jong was the next Frog to finish, posting a 6-2, 6-4 victory on court three with a break in the final game. His win came after Tennessee claimed a point at No. 2, putting TCU back in front, 3-1, with three matches still in play.
With the championship on the line, it was freshman Pedro Vives who came through, overcoming an opening set loss to win his next two sets and clinch the title: 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Vives had his serve broken in his first service game of the third set, falling behind, 2-0, before immediately breaking back and then finally securing a second break to go in front, 5-4. He would serve an ace on championship point to give TCU the 4-1 clinch.
