Horned Frogs win streak snapped at 10
FORT WORTH – No. 1 TCU men's tennis (12-2) suffered its second loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling to Michigan, 4-1, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU dropped the doubles point for just the second time all season, before Michigan won three of the first four completed singles matches, clinching the win. Sophomore Jake Fearnley recorded the lone TCU point, winning at No. 5 singles: 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
"Disappointing loss today," head coach David Roditi said. "We knew we were playing a very good team, one of the best in the country. They're fully healthy and very well coached. Both teams have been indoors for a long time, and they simply played better than we did. They outcompeted us in some spots. We were doing everything we could to get into some matches but just couldn't do it. We need to find ways to avoid being down quickly and have some better starts. Our guys did a good job of hanging in there. I felt that if we could have turned things around on two, that we were in a good spot to win the match. But congratulations to Michigan. Back to work. We have a long season ahead of us, we'll continue to get our reps outside, get better and continue to improve. Thank you for all the support today, Chancellor Boschini, Athletics Director Donati, Dean Pullin from the Neeley School of Business, I really appreciate all of them coming out and showing their love after the success that we had. Now it's time to continue moving forward and get better. Go Frogs!
Michigan won the doubles point after winning a tiebreaker at No. 3. The Wolverines went on to win two singles matches in straight sets, taking a 3-0 lead. Juan Carlos Aguilar won five straight games, overcoming a 4-6, 1-4 deficit, to force a third set at No. 2 singles, setting up four three-set matches left on the courts, with the Frogs up a break or on serve in all four matches.
Fearnley won his match in a wild third set that saw more breaks than holds in the latter stages. Fearnley broke his opponent to go up 4-3, but couldn't consolidate the break, allowing for Michigan to come back and get the match back on serve, 4-4. But Fearnley stayed aggressive, earning another break to go in front, 6-5, before holding serve for the victory.
Michigan clinched the match on court two a few minutes later, ending the other two three set matches while Luc Fomba and Lui Maxted were each on serve.
