FROG FOCUS
TCU heads to Seattle amid a six-match winning streak. The Horned Frogs played their first nine matches of the season at home, taking down four Top 20 opponents including three members of the tournament field (No. 4-seed Florida, No. 12 Virginia and No. 15 Ole Miss).
TCU has won all nine doubles points to begin the season, the longest streak to start a campaign since 2004. Should the Horned Frogs win the doubles point tomorrow, it will be tied for the longest streak of doubles points to begin a season in program history (10 in 2004).
The Frogs haven't shown any weakness in doubles so far this season, winning 18 of 20 completed matches. The top pairing of Jake Fearnley and Luc Fomba are 6-1 at the No. 1 spot, defeating 2021 doubles national champions Adam Walton and Pat Harper from Tennessee earlier this season (6-3). The No. 2 pairing of Lui Maxted and Sander Jong, ranked No. 20 in the country, are a perfect 6-0 together this year, including a victory over the No. 6 ranked doubles pair, at the time, of Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui from Tennessee (7-6 (1)). TCU's third pairing, Juan Carlos Aguilar and Tim Ruehl, are 5-1 this season, and have won their last five completed matches together, entering this weekend.
In singles play, the Frogs boast a 30-12 record, 9-7 against ranked opponents. TCU's most consistent position on the court has come at No. 3, where Sander Jong (4-1), Tomas Jirousek (1-0), Lui Maxted (1-0) and Pedro Vives (1-0) combine for a 7-1 record.
Jong, Fomba and Fearnley lead the squad with six singles wins each this year. Fearnley has provided much needed depth to the roster, going 6-1 in singles matches this season, playing No. 4-6, while also posting a perfect 3-0 record against ranked foes. His three ranked wins tops the charts for TCU players this season.
TCU is 22-28 all-time at Indoor Nationals and 7-8 in the David Roditi era. Last season, the Frogs went 1-2 at Indoor nationals, falling to Virginia in the opening round (4-3) before falling to Tennessee the next day (4-3) and finishing off the tournament with a 4-3 victory over No. 1 USC.
FROGS AT INDOOR NATIONALS
Five of the eight players on TCU's roster have at least two years of experience at Indoor Nationals. Fomba and Jong are returning for their fourth time, while Juan Carlos Aguilar will be making his third appearance and first for TCU (previous two with Texas A&M). Below is the career records for each player at Indoor Nationals:
Luc Fomba – 12-5 (7-2 singles, 5-3 doubles)
Sander Jong – 11-4 (6-2 singles, 5-2 doubles)
Juan Carlos Aguilar – 4-5 (3-2 singles, 1-3 doubles)*
Jake Fearnley – 3-3 (1-1 singles, 2-2 doubles)
Tomas Jirousek – 2-1 (2-1 singles, 0-0 doubles)
* Record while playing for Texas A&M
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The Horned Frogs open the tournament against a familiar foe, Virginia. TCU defeated UVA in its last match, on Feb. 13, 4-1. Should TCU win that match, the next opponent would be the winner of Texas vs. Florida at 11 a.m. on Saturday. With a loss, TCU would play the loser of the Texas vs. Florida match at 2 p.m. Saturday.
TCU is 3-1 this season against teams in the tournament field. The Frogs are one of three Big 12 teams featured in the tournament alongside No. 2 seed Baylor and No. 13 seed Texas.
