Horned Frogs battle back to take down No. 12 Virginia, 4-2
SEATTLE, Wash. – No. 4 TCU men's tennis (9-1) showcased its depth and unfailing competitive spirit, coming back from losing the doubles point to defeat No. 12-seed Virginia, 4-2, on Friday afternoon inside the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash. TCU advances into the quarterfinals of the ITA Team Indoor National Championship with the win. The Frogs will play the winner of No. 4 Florida vs. No. 13 Texas, tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT.
This was the second win of the week for TCU over Virginia, after the Frogs collected a 4-1 victory on Sunday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU improves to 9-1 this season and 5-1 against ranked opponents.
The Horned Frogs are into the Indoor Nationals quarterfinals for the first time since 2019 and the third time in the David Roditi era (2019 and 2016).
"What a college battle," head coach David Roditi said. "Not gonna lie, it feels good to be on this side of a battle like this. Virginia competes so much and plays so well. Two team that were preseason ranked in the Top 6 and somehow, we're playing them in the round of 16. Very fortunate to get through this match. I'm so proud of our guys. We have a lot to learn from doubles. We lost it for the first time this year. But at the same time, they bounced back in singles and showed everyone that we don't need the doubles point to win a big match. Fearnley was big, beating a very good player for the second time this week, which is not easy to do. Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted, two guys who have never been here at this tournament, come through with two wins against some very experienced players. Hell of a job by those two freshmen. And then, of course, Charlie Aguilar, one of the best competitors in college tennis, comes through like that with all the pressure on him. We'll have another big one tomorrow against a great team, either Texas or Florida. We've got to take care of our bodies and be ready to play tomorrow. I want to thank the Frog fans. We had a lot of purple in the crowd today cheering us on. We're always so thankful for that. Go Frogs!"
The Horned Frogs clinched the dual with four singles victories from Jake Fearnley, Pedro Vives, Lui Maxted and Juan Carlos Aguilar. One match was left unfinished, with Luc Fomba up a break in his third set, 5-3.
TCU lost the doubles point for the first time this season, bringing the doubles point streak to an end, at nine in a row to begin the season, the second longest streak in program history (10 in 2004). Aguilar and Tim Ruehl recorded a win at No. 3 doubles but UVA took the point with wins on the other two courts.
