Horned Frogs record second Top 10 victory of the year
FORT WORTH – No. 4 TCU men's tennis (8-1) ended the home indoor season with a 4-1 victory over No. 6 Virginia on Sunday afternoon inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU won the doubles point and three singles matches to record its fourth ranked win of the season and second over a Top 10 ranked foe. The Horned Frogs end the home indoor season with six straight wins, three coming against Top 25 challengers.
"That was a hell of a win for the guys and for the program," head coach David Roditi said. "We've never beaten Virginia as coaches, since we've been here. We finally got them. They have a great program with great coaches and great players. It's very hard to get a win over them, so we're very proud. They have some great guys over there that compete so hard all the way to the end. This is a great way to end our indoor season at home. I'm so thankful to the community. We've developed a great atmosphere at our home matches, the guys love it and the TCU community has really embraced it. Now, we get to rest our bodies and get ready for indoors. It was great to see Pedro [Vives] win that match and then for Jake [Fearnley] to come out after having to wait for his match to start, he absolutely took care of business. For me, the highlight of today was the heart and fight shown by our top two players and team captains, Luc Fomba and Juan Carlos Aguilar. For Fomba to have match points, not get it, and to come back in the third set and win showed a lot of heart and competitiveness. Charlie was playing one of the toughest outs in college tennis. That guy makes you work for everything. He was down and everybody probably thought he was done but by the time we clinched he was nearly at match point. It's a shame we couldn't play those final points but I have so much respect for the heart that they showed as leaders of our team. Go Frogs!"
The Horned Frogs clinched the dual with a victory from Jake Fearnley at No. 5 singles. Two singles matches were left unfinished, with TCU leading on both courts.
TCU got off to a strong start in doubles play, with the No. 1 pairing (Luc Fomba and Fearnley) breaking their opponents' serve in their first opportunity to go in front, 2-0. They would hold serve for the remainder of the match to win, 6-4. The No. 2 pairing of Lui Maxted and Sander Jong had fallen behind, 2-4, before breaking back to tie their match, 5-5, by the time Fomba and Fearnley won at No. 1. Maxted and Jong broke their opponent at 6-5, delivering a break, set, game and doubles point clinching victory for TCU's ninth straight doubles point in 2022.
The Horned Frogs have started the season 9-0 in doubles points, the best start in the Roditi era and longest since 2004 (10 doubles points).
