TCU improves to 19-4 after three days of competition
FORT WORTH -- TCU Women's Tennis won all four of its singles matches and split doubles competition to finish the third day of the TCU Invite with a 5-1 record on Monday morning at the Bayard h. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The doubles pairing of Stevie Kennedy and Tate Schroeder notched their third victory of 2021, and third in as many days, in dominant fashion. The duo secured their largest margin of victory this tournament, 6-2, on their way to a 3-0 record. The win improves TCU's doubles record to a tournament-best 7-1.
Marie Norris and Addy Guevara both claimed singles victories for the third consecutive day, placing themselves in strong contention for one of the three singles titles up for grabs this tournament.
Norris continued her singles dominance in her opening set, using powerful forehands to dictate play on her way to a 6-1 win. She had to face adversity on the scoreboard for the first time in the set two, suffering a late break to allow her opponent within one game, 5-4. But Norris put her experience and tenacity on full display, securing the final game and taking the match: 6-1, 6-4. Norris is now 3-0 in singles play this season, winning 36 of her 45 total games (80 percent).
Guevara struggled out of the gates, dropping her opening set, 1-6. But the third-year Horned Frog settled down between sets and delivered a brilliant tactical display in the second, using a powerful backhand and effective slice to secure the set by three games. In the third, Guevara showed her fighting spirit, effectively placing shots into the corners and forcing her opponent into awkward positions. She would take the third-set-tiebreak, 10-7, to pocket her third singles win of the year.
Isabel Pascual Montalvo and Margaret Polk both added their second singles wins as well. Montalvo found a strategy that worked for her midway through the opening set and rode that to a comfortable second set victory, securing the win: 6-4, 6-1. Polk showcased her tremendous defense in her match, tracking down balls and putting her opponent in difficult situations on long points. She would collect her second win of the tournament, 6-4, 6-3.
Through three days, TCU is 19-4 in all competitions. All seven participating Horned Frogs have at least two victories across singles and doubles competitions. Norris and Guevara lead the team with five wins (two doubles and three singles) after three days of matches.
The Horned Frogs finish off the TCU Invitational tomorrow morning in their final preparation for the beginning of the spring dual season, coming on Saturday, when TCU hosts Abilene Christian and Tarleton State on Saturday, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
