Horned Frogs sweep doubles, win four of six singles matches on first day of new season
FORT WORTH -- TCU Women's Tennis delivered seven wins, including a 3-0 performance in doubles, on Saturday, the first day of the TCU Invite at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
"We're very grateful all our guest teams were able to get here safely this weekend to allow for this competition," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "It feels so good to watch the ladies compete and do what they enjoy doing. Today was a great start to our season and I'm confident each day we will improve in all the controllable areas that will allow us to be the best we can be."
The Horned Frogs won all three of their doubles matches against pairings from North Texas and Central Arkansas. The Spanish duo of Mercedes Aristegui and Isabel Pascual Montalvo headlined the morning, showing good chemistry and resolve to quickly dispatch their opponents from UCA, 6-1.
In singles play, redshirt senior Marie Norris shined in a high-quality display of tennis. The six-year veteran of the TCU tennis program made her return to the courts last season, after missing 14 months with an injury, and quickly ascended the national rankings, finishing at No. 81. After her senior season was cut short last year, she returned once more and delivered a clinical 6-1, 6-0 victory in her first singles match of 2021.
Addy Guevara was in good form to start the season as well, securing a straight-set victory in her first match of the year, 6-4, 6-2, over UCA's Yada Vasupongchai. Stevie Kennedy and Mercedes Aristegui both battled through three-sets before claiming their first singles wins of the year as well.
The Horned Frogs will return to the courts tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. for the second of the four-day tournament.
