TCU will head to Lawrence, Kan. for the 2019 Big 12 Championship from April 18-21.
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Postseason action for the No. 7 TCU men's tennis team will begin this weekend as the Horned Frogs head to Lawrence, Kan., for the 2019 Big 12 Tournament that will run from April 18-21 at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
TCU (19-5) are the No. 3 seed and will face the No. 6 seed and No. 32 Oklahoma State (14-10) on Friday at Noon. This will mark only the second time in program history that TCU has faced the Cowboys in the Big 12 Championship with the Frogs coming away with the 4-0 win in the quarterfinals in 2015. Friday's match will also mark the third time this season the teams have faced off with TCU getting the 4-0 victory in January at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend and the 4-1 win in Stillwater on Sunday in the regular season finale.
TCU Notables
TCU enters postseason on a three-match winning streak after defeating three ranked opponents in No. 8 Texas A&M (4-3), No. 21 Oklahoma (4-3) and No. 26 Oklahoma State (4-1) to end the regular season. The Frogs finished tied for second in the Big 12 Conference to mark the fifth straight season finishing in the top half of the league.
Senior Alex Rybakov enters his final postseason with a No. 3 singles ranking as the Coral Springs, Fla., native has a 23-2 mark on the season with 15 wins over ranked opponents. Junior Alastair Gray rounds out the singles rankings at No. 24 with the Twickenham, England native posting 17 wins on the year including the final victory in the 4-3 win over Oklahoma. Gray and Rybakov pair up for a No. 15 doubles ranking with the duo getting six wins over ranked opponents while teammates Bertus Kruger and Reese Stalder are not far behind with a No. 17 doubles ranking. Kruger and Stalder lead the team with 17 overall wins including 10 at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Scouting the Cowboys
Oklahoma State is looking to snap a three-match losing streak as the Cowboys have struggled down the stretch with losses in five of the last six matches played. No. 48 Matej Vocel is the only ranked singles player for OSU and also has a doubles ranking of No. 74 with Emile Hudd. Mathier Scaglia and Maxim Tybar also have a doubles ranking for the Cowboys as the duo sit at No. 38.
Frogs in Postseason
TCU will be looking to make an appearance in the in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship for the sixth time in the seven years in the league. The Frogs have made an appearance in a conference tournament final 19 times in program history with TCU taking the crown on 15 of those occasions. The team has won the Big 12 Tournament Championship twice under the direction of head coach Davidi Roditi with the Frogs taking the crown in 2016 and 2017.
