TCU’s come back fell short as Oklahoma State got the 4-2 victory.
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A tough battle did not end in the No. 7 TCU men's tennis team's favor as the Horned Frogs dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 32 Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Big 12 Tennis Championship at the Sports Pavilion Courts in Lawrence, Kan., on Friday afternoon.
The Cowboys (15-10) earned the early lead in the match as TCU (19-6) dropped the doubles point with losses on courts two and three. Oklahoma State continued to put the pressure on the Frogs in singles action by grabbing five first sets and getting the victory on court three to go up 2-0. TCU had to dig deep to start the comeback as Bertus Kruger was the only player to get a straight-set victory with a 6-4, 7-6(4) win on court four.
Just moments later, freshman Sander Jong bounced back to get the 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win on court six to even up the match at 2-2. The other three courts in action were all battling it out in third sets, but the Cowboys proved to have the final momentum needed as they pushed their way to wins on courts one and five to get the overall match victory.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"Congratulations to Oklahoma State. They deserve it and their coaches deserve it. This one is on us coaches. We didn't get our squad prepared the best way. It took us a long time to start playing and competing. I'm sorry for letting down all our fans back home and our fans that made the drive here to Lawrence to support us. Hopefully we learn from this and we stay hungry or we will have a very disappointing end to our season. I wish Oklahoma State the best of luck because they have gone through a lot this season and they were due for something positive."
