FORT WORTH, Texas – A 17-point performance by Amy Okonkwo helped spark the TCU women's basketball team to a 62-48 win over West Virginia in its opening game of Big 12 play at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday night.
The win improves TCU's record to 11-1, setting a new program record for the best start to a season and giving the Horned Frogs eight consecutive wins, which ties for the second-longest winning streak in school history.
Okonkwo's effort continued to add to her history of strong performances against the Mountaineers (9-3) as she is averaging 15.6 points and 8.2 rebounds in five career games against WVU.
She was joined in double-digits by fellow senior Jordan Moore who added 11 points, four rebounds and three blocks, while junior Jayde Woods poured in a season-high nine points in the victory.
The Horned Frogs held the Mountaineers to their lowest point total of the season as they came into the contest averaging 80.1 points per game. With WVU's 32.1 percent shooting effort, TCU has yet to allow a team to shoot over 40 percent in a game this season.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs used two key runs in the first half to go up by as many as 20 on the Mountaineers.
The first came in the opening minutes of the game as TCU started the contest on a 10-3 run, holding West Virginia scoreless for over four minutes after it hit an early 3-pointer. The Frogs blitzed the Mountaineers again at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarters, using a 16-0 spurt to take a 32-14 advantage.
Spurred by its defense, TCU took a 14-point lead into the locker room at halftime after holding West Virginia to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and a season-low 22 first-half points.
Undeterred, West Virginia bounced back to cut the Horned Frogs' lead to as few as eight points at the end of the third quarter.
TCU went on to outscore the Mountaineers, 14-8, over the final 10 minutes, however, to emerge with its largest victory ever in the series between the two teams.
