WACO, Texas – The TCU men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2018 season on Friday night at the Baylor Twilight Invitational. The women's team finished with three top 10 runners and finished third overall, while the men finished fifth.
WOMEN'S 4K
Evelyn Mandel was the first Horned Frog to cross the finish line, finishing fourth overall in 13:52.2. Lindsay Tomaini stayed close with Mandel throughout the race and finished sixth overall with a 13:58.4 mark. Senior Kirsten Johnston rounded out the top 10 with a 14:22.5 finish. Fellow senior Elizabeth Baker had a strong run as well, finishing 12th in 14:26.9.
The women's team across the board improved their times from last year's meet. Mandel and Tomaini both improved their times by over 30 seconds from a year ago, while Johnston improved by 26 seconds and Baker by 14 seconds.
Freshman Isabella Aguiar made her collegiate debut and recorded a top 20 finish. The freshman from San Diego, Calif., finished 18th overall with a time of 14:39.3
MEN'S 6K
The men's team was led by a pair of freshmen newcomers. Sean Byrne finished 11th with an 18:50.0 time, followed closely by Lakelin Conrad in 13th. Patrick LaCour shaved 24 seconds off of last years' time, finishing in 19:20.5.
COACH'S QUOTES
"We're two weeks into training, and they have, by far, exceeded my expectations," cross country coach Jennifer Fazioli said. "I had two women under 14, I've never had anyone close to breaking 14 here. They ran well together, they packed together, I was just very pleased with where they are. It makes me excited for the rest of the year. Now, we get to have three solid weeks of training before we hit A&M and we still need to add Mariah (Castillo) into that mix. It's a whole new year, the team dynamic is much better. On the guys side, I think the guys showed me some good things. I was really impressed with Sean (Byrne) and Lakelin (Conrad) did extremely well and moved up the entire way. Some of my guys were feeling a little tired from the training and the amount of mileage that's in their legs from the summer, which is fine because now we are going to start cutting down a little bit. I think the guys did well, it was a good day for us. I was pleased with the effort."
