COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The TCU men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, where the women finished second overall. It was the women's first 6,000m race of the season and the men's first 8,000m.
FRESHMAN DEBUT
One of the top distance recruits coming into the season, freshman Mariah Castillo made her anticipated debut on Saturday. In her first race as a Horned Frog, Castillo was TCU's top performer with a fourth-place finish (21.57.8).
TOP 10
In addition to Castillo, TCU had two other top ten finishers. Evelyn Mandel finished one spot behind Castillo in fifth (22:01.7) and Lindsay Tomaini finished ninth (22.13.5). Only TCU and Rice had three top 10 finishers on the day. Kirsten Johnston finished 11th in 22:20.1
FRESHMAN TRIO
For the second meet in a row, TCU's men were led by freshman. Lakelin Conrad was TCU's top finisher with a 26:04.0 mark. Sean Byrne and Blaine Stuart followed at 26:40.0 and 26:56.2 respectively.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"The women ran very well for it being still so early in the season," cross country coach Jennifer Fazioli said. "Mariah, Evelyn, and Lindsay ran together the entire way and looked strong doing so. KJ moved up throughout and looked the best I've seen her look in years. We just need a stronger fifth and we've got a number of girls who can fulfill that role. Tough day weather wise but the result was still solid. For the men we've got some freshmen who have really taken to the training and made an impact quickly."
UP NEXT
TCU returns to action next Friday when the women's team competes at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational, scheduled for Friday, September 28.
