FORT WORTH, Texas – Sydney Coleman, a former TCU women's basketball student-athlete and soon to be TCU graduate, has signed to play professionally in Australia.
Coleman will join the Southern Peninsula Sharks who compete at the state championship level of the Big V league, the highest level within the state of Victoria's top league. She will join the Sharks shortly after she receives her degree in communication studies at TCU's Spring Commencement on May 12.
"I'm blessed and grateful for this opportunity to play the game that I love professionally," Coleman said. "I want to say thank you to my coaches, teammates and TCU for helping me grow and learn from so many people. Thank you for pushing me and making me work my absolute hardest. If it wasn't for the many trials and triumphs here, I wouldn't be the woman I am today."
Coleman just completed her senior season in 2017-18, helping the Frogs to their most successful season since joining the Big 12. The Cypress, Texas, native was a big part of TCU's 23 wins and WNIT semifinal run. During her senior season, the 6-foot-1 guard started the first games of her career and posted the most points, rebounds, assists and steals of her career.
"This is an opportunity earned and well deserved; we are to the moon happy for Syd," TCU head coach Raegan Pebley said. "She is a testament to trusting the process and hard work. Sydney will be joining an excellent club. The Sharks are an outstanding organization with a tradition and culture of success."
The Sharks are already in the midst of their season and sit in third place in the 10-team Big V league with a 3-1 record. Coleman will join the team about half way through its 18-game regular-season schedule. She will be one of two Americans on the roster, joining former Oklahoma guard Peyton Little who was a three-time All-Big 12 selection.
The league features teams from the state capital of Melbourne and its surrounding areas, including Dromana where the Sharks are located. The Southern Peninsula Sharks was the home club of current Frog Ella Hellessey who won a state championship with her hometown team in 2015.
