FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU took a one-point lead with 3:02 left in the game Monday night, but in the end came up short, falling to Texas Tech, 76-69.
The Rundown
Coming into the night, the Horned Frogs had won four of their last six Big 12 Conference home games, but in a sea-saw game that could've gone either way down the stretch, TCU missed on some key opportunities in the last 3 minutes of the contest that eventually moved the Frogs to 9-9 on the season and 1-5 in league play.
Chauncey Collins was rock solid all night, leading the way with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. The sophomore, who also tallied five rebounds, did most of his damage from deep, scorching the Red Raiders for a 5-of-10 showing from behind the arc. His five made three's were a career-high.
Fellow sophomore Vladimir Brodziansky was also in double-figures, scoring 18 points on 5-of-9 from the field. Brodziansky made several key free throws down the stretch, which resulted in a career-high eight made free throws on 12 attempts. The Slovakian native also totaled a team-high six boards.
For the game, TCU out-rebounded the Red Raiders (12-5; 2-4 Big 12) to the tune of 36-33. The Horned Frogs also forced Texas Tech into 12 turnovers for the game, while holding a 23-9 advantage in second-chance points. TCU, who only had seven turnovers on the night, also held a 15-8 advantage in points off turnovers, but Tech was able to escape Fort Worth with the win.
Karviar Shepherd got the Frogs going early in the second half, throwing down a thunderous dunk 2 minutes into the period to make it a 42-37 ballgame. Brodziansky would then connect on a baby hook a few plays later and the Frogs pulled within 46-39 with 15:53 showing on the clock.
With the scoreboard reading 51-42 in slight favor of Texas Tech, Collins went back to work from deep, scoring another three ball with 13:47 showing in the half. Brodziansky would then tip home a dunk and watch as Collins drained another three to make it 51-45 midway through the second stanza of action.
With 9:15 on the clock, Shepherd would grab a huge rebound following a miss from JD Miller to inch the Frogs closer at 55-51, but two big three-pointers by Tech would help push the lead back to 10 within a blink of an eye. Chris Washburn would have nothing of it though, scoring an old fashioned three-point play to make it a 63-55 ballgame with 7:20 left.
With the scoreboard reading 64-56 with 6:19 showing on the clock, Collins dropped another triple, but Tech answered right back with a three of its own. The Frogs would cut it to 67-63 down the stretch off a put-back from Miller at the 4:10 mark.
TCU would take a 68-67 lead at the free throw line with 3:02 left, but Texas Tech once again responded with a triple to regain the momentum at 70-68. The Red Raiders never trailed again in the contest.
Texas Tech opened the game on a 6-2 run until Collins buried a triple at the 17:41 mark. The Frogs then went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-6 lead. The sophomore continued his hot shooting at 15:32 mark, drilling his second triple of the game.
The two teams would trade baskets the next couple of minutes and TCU would take a 16-14 lead with 13:15 on the clock, but it was short lived as Tech went on a mini run to go up by four. The Purple and White would pull within 22-21 a few minutes later as Collins would score on another jumper midway through the opening frame.
The Red Raiders would go on a 12-2 run to take a 34-23 advantage, but Williams would stall the attack, scoring a triple down the stretch of the first half. A few plays later, Collins would connect from deep again and TCU was in business, now down only 36-29 with 3:42 left.
The Horned Frogs would score the next six points to pull within 36-35, but the Red Raiders were able to take a 42-35 lead into halftime.
Quotes of the Game
Chauncey Collins
"We're getting better, but we're obviously not quite there yet. We just need to keep buying into what Coach Johnson is saying because everything he says works. We have to stay confident as a team."
Vladimir Brodziansky
"I was just playing hard and trying to help my team win. We just came short in the end. We just have to continue to improve and take it one step at a time."
Head Coach Trent Johnson
"I thought Chauncey was good. Not because he made some shots, but because he was engaged for the whole game both defensively and offensively in terms of doing exactly what we wanted him to do. You've got to tip your hat to Texas Tech, they're much improved."
"It's six games in, it's early. We are not where we want to be in terms of our won/loss record. We need to continue to fight, gain confidence and stay together as a group. We have to move forward and that's exactly what we will do. We'll keep grinding and keep working. We'll be back on Wednesday and obviously we've got three days to get ready for a very, very talented senior-laden basketball team at Iowa State."
