KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In a game that featured 10 ties and 13 lead changes, No. 9 seeded TCU trailed by only two with about a minute left in the ballgame Thursday afternoon, but No. 1 seeded Kansas held on for a nail-biting 64-59 victory in quarterfinal action at the Sprint Center.
Playing a majority of the game without all-conference honoree Kyan Anderson because of foul trouble, senior Trey Zeigler took over, scoring 20 points on 6-for-15 from the floor, including 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. It marked the second-straight game against KU in which Zeigler scored 20 points. Sophomore Chris Washburn was the only other Horned Frog in double-figures, tallying 10 points on 3-of-6 from the field, while also grabbing a team-high seven boards. Karviar Shepherd and Kenrich Williams added eight points apiece, respectively.
For the game, TCU, now 18-15 overall, outscored Kansas (25-7) off the bench, 10-7. The Horned Frogs played toe-to-toe with the nation's No. 9 ranked team Thursday and had the ballgame tied at 51-51 with 6:42 left, but couldn't get over the hump the rest of the way despite shooting 44 percent in the second half and outscoring the Jayhawks in the period, 33-31.
Zeigler opened the second half, scoring the first four points for TCU to make it a 33-30 ballgame. The Frogs then pulled within one at the charity stripe, but Kansas regained its lead before the senior exploded to the rim to inch the Purple and White within 35-34 with 16:14 showing on the clock. In all, Zeigler scored six out of TCU's first eight points of the second half as the Frogs opened the period on an 8-2 run.
With KU clinging to a 39-36 lead, Zeigler soared in for a tip dunk at the 13-minute mark to make it a 39-38 ballgame. A few plays later, Williams flushed one home and TCU was in business, now down only 45-42 with 10 minutes showing on the clock.
Zeigler would make it a 45-44 ballgame, but Kansas responded, nailing a three on the other end before Williams quieted the crowd, dropping a triple of his own to tie it at 47-47 with 7:51 showing on the clock.
With the score knotted at 51-51, the Jayhawks would take a three-point lead at the charity stripe before the Frogs cut it to 58-55 off a Brandon Parrish dunk with 3 minutes left. The two teams would go back and forth and Kansas led 59-57 in the closing minute, but TCU wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Anderson got the Frogs going on the opening possession, cutting to the hole after a dish from Shepherd. The two teams would trade possessions until Anderson returned the favor to Shepherd, finding the sophomore for the flush with 17:14 showing on the clock, which gave TCU a 4-2 lead early.
At the 14:58 mark, Devonta Abron went to work, scoring an old fashioned three-point play to give the Purple and White a 7-6 advantage. Kansas would take a short lead, but it wasn't for long as Anderson found a cutting Parrish with a beautiful dish to make it 12-11 in favor of TCU at the 10:47 mark of the opening frame.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips with the Jayhawks clinging to a 23-18 lead with a little over 6 minutes remaining in the half, but Shepherd would have nothing of it, burying a jumper to inch TCU closer at 23-20.
A late jumper by Zeigler brought the halftime score to 33-26 in slight favor of Kansas.
