In a game where the Horned Frogs, who have now won two-straight league games, led the entire way, TCU could do no wrong on either end of the court Wednesday, holding the Wildcats to a dismal 16 percent from the field in the first half and 34.5 percent from the floor for the game. In the first half alone, the Purple and White held K-State scoreless from the field for over 9 minutes of action, while going on a 19-0 run to close the half.
For the game, TCU, now 16-10 overall and 3-10 in league play, shot 53.5 percent from the field, including 63.6 percent in the opening frame. The Frogs also forced the Wildcats into 13 turnovers, while holding a 16-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
Individually, TCU had four players score in double-figures as Chris Washburn tallied a career-high 17 points on 4-of-7 from the field, which included a 9-for-13 showing from the charity stripe. He also grabbed a team-high eight boards in the win. For a second-straight game, sophomore Karviar Shepherd scored in double-figures, totaling 12 points on 5-of-8 from the field.
Kenrich Williams and Amric Fields added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Not to be outdone, senior Kyan Anderson moved into No. 6 all-time in program history in scoring, surpassing TCU great Kurt Thomas with a nine-point outing, while dishing out a team-high five assists.
K-State (13-14; 6-8 Big 12) saw Nino Williams and Trey Harris score 14 points apiece. Thomas Gipson added 12 points in the loss.
Shepherd got the Frogs going right out of the gate in the second half, receiving an alley-oop from Washburn for the throw down during the early stages of the period. K-State was able to pull within 37-30 a few trips later off a 13-0 run, but Fields would have nothing of it, nailing a turn-around jumper at the 13:53 mark.
With the scoreboard 41-35 in favor of TCU, Brandon Parrish exploded to the rack for the layup over Gipson at the 11-minute mark. On the next possession, Anderson found the bottom of the net and the Frogs were back up by 10 at 45-35.
By the time Washburn soared to the rim for a throw down plus the foul over a Wildcat, TCU had moved its lead back up to 50-35 with 8:08 showing in the game. A few plays later, Williams got into the act, stealing the rock and going coast-to-coast for the layup to make it a 53-37 ballgame with about 6 minutes remaining in the game.
K-State would pull within 63-53 down the stretch, but TCU was able to nail some key free throws late to win its second-straight league game.
Fields beat the shot clock on the opening possession of the first half, draining a deep three, but K-State answered on the other end before Washburn found the bottom of the net 3 minutes into the half to give TCU a 5-2 lead.
By the time Shepherd ripped the nets over Gipson for a jumper, TCU was in business, now up 10-4 with a little over 12 minutes remaining in the opening stanza. Washburn gave TCU a 13-5 lead with 11:30 showing on the scoreboard, scoring on an old fashioned three-point play.
With TCU up 14-11 at the midway point of the first half, Fields found pay dirt underneath off a dish at the top of the lane from Shepherd. The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips until Fields tickled the twine from deep at the 6-minute mark, which made the scoreboard read 19-15 in favor of TCU.
The Purple and White built their lead to 35-15 thanks in large part to their defense, holding K-State scoreless from the field for over 9 minutes of action, while going on a 19-0 run. During the run, Washburn's reverse layup plus the foul at the 3:30 mark helped build the Purple and White lead to 26-15. TCU continued to pile it on as Parrish nailed a triple with about a minute to go in the half to give the Frogs a 33-15 lead halftime lead.
In all, K-State's last field goal of the first half came at the 9:42 mark.
