TCU 69, Kansas State 55
Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center
Attendance: 3,804
TCU Head Coach Trent Johnson:
Opening Statement:
"One of the things we talked about before we went out was to try to build off of the last 15 minutes of the Oklahoma State game. I thought we were pretty good in the first half. It was probably the best half of basketball that we've played all year. And then, obviously, Kansas State has been in every league game all year long. We knew they were going to make a run at us in the second half, and they did. I thought we kept our poise, and right now, we've got some guys that are shooting the ball well."
On pulling out a tight game:
"We're growing up, we're maturing and I think that to learn how to win, you have to go through it. I said this when we were in that stretch of playing good teams and getting beat when we were not playing well and not playing with confidence. There was a stretch there when they [Kansas State] made their run, and we weren't playing well, but we sustained our confidence and that enabled us to get out of that."
TCU forward Chris Washburn:
On getting back-to-back wins:
"We're just trying to stack them up right now. The first time we won against Texas Tech, we came back and laid an egg against Texas. In this game, we were just trying to come out and be aggressive like we were in the previous game [against Oklahoma State]."
On if the 20-point lead at halftime was enough:
"It's never enough with a team like that. That's a great team. Every game they've played in conference has been a single digit game, so we know they're not giving up. We know they're going to try to come back and execute and win.
Kansas State Head Coach Bruce Webber:
Opening Statement:
"We knew we'd get a great effort from them [TCU]. I told our guys that both of us [TCU and Kansas State] came off of good wins on Saturday, and who had the maturity and determination to come and play hard would be the one that would come out with the win. You have to give them credit. I thought we were very lethargic to start. To our guys credit, the second half that we played had greater energy, greater passion and gave us a chance. They had four guys in double figures, and they were the better team. They play everyone close."
On the job Trent Johnson has done for the TCU Basketball program:
"I think he's done a nice job to rejuvenate it. They've been close every game, and that's what we tried to explain to our players. The game that they made free throws against Oklahoma State, they won it. You come here [to TCU], and you have to play now. Even at home, we had to play because they're going to compete. It's not easy to go through what he went through last year, but he's kept them competing and playing hard."
Kansas State forward Nino Williams:
On his thoughts about the first half:
"I thought in the first half that we were just flat. It doesn't matter what percentage we shot; we were bad on defense and giving up layups. But like coach said, getting down 20 points is hard away from home as well. We fought to get back in, but they made some plays down the stretch and hit some shots when they needed to."
