FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Rice Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
"We struggled to cover their four players in the middle to begin the game," TCU head coach Dan Abdalla said. "Once we settled in later in the game, we didn't step up as individuals tonight. We had too many giveaways and soft tackles. We had a hard time playing as a team tonight. We just need to keep working on it. The only real opportunity that we gave away was the goal that they scored. We just need to have people step up and embrace the challenge. That was the difference tonight."
The Owls handled the ball for most of the match, toppling the Frogs in the shots department, 26-9. Senior Katie Taylor led TCU with a pair of shots for the night, while four other players landed a shot on goal.
Rice came out firing to begin the first half, getting seven shots off in the opening 15 minutes of play. TCU freshman goalkeeper Alicen Wright stood her ground in the box, making a handful of spectacular saves throughout the night.
TCU freshman Natalie Werner got the opening shot off for in the 25th minute, lacing a strike directly at the Rice goalkeeper Amy Czyz. Sophomore Brittany Slyman would later find herself in the Owls' box, maneuvering around the defender with enough space to get a shot off with her left foot, only to be turned away by Czyz.
As the first half came to a close, Taylor had a golden chance to put the Frogs on top before the break, but her shot went just over the crossbar to end the first half, 0-0.
TCU senior Kristen Halverson got the second frame going with a shot from just outside the box on target, but again, Czyz was there to keep the match tied.
The Frogs had their best chance of the night slip by in the 62nd minute. Coming off of a corner kick by Slyman, senior Alex Mechalske opened up a strike from about 15 yards out, only to have it blocked by an oncoming Rice defender. The deflection landed at the feet of junior Shelby Campbell, but her shot attempted hit the side of the goal from the left side.
Rice scored the eventual game-winner off of a set piece from the corner. As senior Annie Kadota sent the ball in, sophomore Jessica Howard found on open shot from the middle of the box, banging it in the back of the net at the 67:03 mark for her first goal of the young season.
With their backs against the wall, the Frogs began to play with more urgency, trying to move the ball into Rice territory. Following a foul on the Owls, Taylor ripped a shot on a free kick right to Czyz.
TCU earned a pair of chances to push the match into overtime in the final five minutes. Freshman Tori Hale had her opportunity go wide in the 87th minute, while sophomore Ashley Jones triggered a blast from the top of the box that missed right.
With the loss, TCU drops to 1-2 on the year, while Rice improves to 2-1. The all-time series between the two teams moves to 4-4-1.
TCU will have a week before returning to the pitch, traveling to Texas State on Sept. 2. The road match is set for 7 p.m.
