FORT WORTH—Junior guard J.R. Cadot scored 17 points, but No. 7 BYU ran out to an early lead and never looked back Saturday during a 79-56 Cougar victory at a sold-out Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
The setback dropped TCU's season record to 10-18 overall and 1-12 in Mountain West Conference play. BYU improved to 25-2 overall and 11-1 in the MWC with its fifth consecutive victory.
Saturday's contest featured an attendance of 7,258, which ranked as the third-largest crowd ever to see a game at Daniel-Meyer Colisuem. The total fell only nine fans short of the record of 7,267 set Dec. 1, 2003, when the Horned Frogs took on No. 2 Kansas.
Cadot led TCU in scoring for the third consecutive game Saturday, making 8-of-11 shots from the floor while pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Garlon Green totaled 10 points, his team-high 21st double-figure performance, while senior guard Greg Hill added nine points on a 3-of-7 effort from 3-point range.
Junior point guard Hank Thorns set a career high with 12 assists. It marked his seventh outing this season with double digits in helpers. The total leads the MWC and ranks tied for third nationally, while his Saturday output ranks as the top individual performance in the conference this season.
Senior guard Jimmer Fredette, a National Player of the Year candidate, led BYU with 23 points. He went 6-of-16 from the field and 8-of-9 at the charity stripe. Four other Cougars scored in double figures, including forwards Stephen Rogers (15), Brandon Davies (11) and Noah Hartsock and guard Jackson Emery (11).
The Cougars were deadly from outside throughout the contest, finishing 11-of-25 from 3-point range, which tied for the most treys against the Frogs in a single game this season. The squad also recorded a 42-32 advantage on the boards. TCU did manage to take care of the ball, recording only eight turnovers against 10 for BYU. The figure led to a 16-6 Frog edge in points off turnovers.
BYU led from start to finish, scoring the game's opening seven points and building a 10-point edge just over eight minutes into the contest. The Cougars lit up the nets from outside early, making nine of 15 3-point attempts in the opening period while building a 45-28 lead at intermission.
The key stretch of the first half came after a Green 3-pointer cut the lead to only three points, 27-24. Abouo responded with a trey on BYU's next possession, as the Cougars followed with an 11-0 run overall to move on top 14 points.
TCU was unable to climb closer than 15 points in the second half, as BYU held the Frogs on only 34.3 percent shooting in the stanza.
TCU returns to the road Tuesday, when it heads to Salt Lake City, Utah, to take on Utah. The contest, which is set to tip off at 8 p.m. CT, will be televised live by The MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn.).
