TCU senior point guard Hank Thorns was one of nearly 60 players named Monday as national candidates for the 2012 Bob Cousy Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced. The annual award, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes college basketball's top point guard.
Thorns made his second career appearance on the list, joining 14 other players who were named candidates for the second straight season.
This original list of candidates will be narrowed down to a final 20 by Jan. 1, final 10 by Feb. 1 and final five by March 1. A Hall-of-Fame-appointed screening committee will be narrowing down the candidates, while a premier selection committee will ultimately choose the winner.
Both of the Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on Monday, April 5 in New Orleans as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
Thorns, in his second and final season playing for TCU, entered Monday ranking No. 5 in the Mountain West in assists (4.40 apg) and minutes played (33.00 mpg); No. 6 in steals (1.80 spg); No. 7 in scoring (13.5 ppg); and No. 8 in assist/turnover ratio (1.16). He has led the Frogs in scoring a team-high four times this season and in assists each contest.
A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Thorns experienced a breakout season in his first year on the court for TCU in 2010-11 after transferring from Virginia Tech. A third-team All-Mountain West selection, he led the MW in both assists (7.0 apg) and assist/turnover ratio (2.71) as a junior and was the only individual in the nation to rank among the NCAA's top-12 players in both categories.
Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award have included: Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph's), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A & M), D.J. Augustin (Texas), Ty Lawson (North Carolina), Greivis Vasquez (Maryland) and Kemba Walker (Connecticut).
