SAN DIEGO - San Diego State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back during an 84-61 victory over No. 23 TCU Tuesday at the Aztecs' Viejas Arena. The setback snapped the Lady Frogs' four-game winning streak.
The loss dropped the Frogs' season record to 19-6 overall and 9-3 in Mountain West Conference play, cutting the team's lead in the league standings to one game over second-place BYU.
TCU faced an uphill battle for much of Tuesday's contest after falling down by 19 points in the game's opening 10 minutes. The Aztecs forced Frog miscues throughout the evening while also controlling the glass to the tune of a 43-32 rebounding advantage. Included in the total were 17 offensive boards. In all, SDSU scored 51 of their 84 points after either grabbing an offensive board or forcing a TCU turnover.
Senior guard TK LaFleur led TCU's offensive efforts with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting. She went 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. Junior guard/forward Helena Sverrisdottir fell only two rebounds and one assist shy of her second career triple-double, as she totaled 16 points, nine assists and eight boards, but she was forced into committing nine turnovers on the evening. Senior guard Eboni Mangum reached double figures for the third straight contest with 12 points.
San Diego State had four players score in double figures, led by senior guard Jene Morris with a game-high 23 points. Junior center Paris Johnson totaled 19 points and nine boards, while senior guard Quenese Davis recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Coco Davis chipped in 12 points.
The Aztecs shot 46.4 percent from the field for the evening compared to only 36.2 percent for TCU. The Frogs made only 9-of-33 (27.3 percent) of their second-half attempts.
San Diego State opened the game on a blistering pace, forcing Frog miscues and turning them into points. The Aztecs led by 19 points, 29-10, only 10 minutes into the game with the help of 15 points off turnovers and three 3-pointers. Despite digging the early hole, TCU responded with 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions, two by LaFleur and one by Mangum, before the Aztecs closed the half on an 18-8 run to take total control at the contest, 49-31.
The Frog offense bogged down in the second half, and the squad was unable to gain any traction against the Aztecs. A LaFleur trey with 12:41 remaining did cut the team's deficit to 15, but a 10-2 SDSU run later in the period boosted the lead to a game-high margin of 26 points with 6:30 left.
TCU returns to action next Tuesday, Feb. 23, with a home matchup against UNLV. The 6:30 p.m. tip-off will feature a live telecast by The MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn.).
