Sverrisdottir, who posted a career-high in field goals made Wednesday with 11, simply could not be stopped. The Iceland native torched the Mavericks in the first half, scoring 16 of her game-high 30 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including going 3-of-4 from deep. Overall, Sverrisdottir went 11-of-17 on the night, while also shooting 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
Several other Horned Frogs played solid games Wednesday, including sophomore DeLisa Gross, who scored 12 points on five-of-six shooting from the floor. Emily Carter rounded out the Frog scorers in double figures with 11 points. Carter posted a new career-high in assists with eight against the Mavs, while freshman Briesha Wynn cleaned up the glass with a new career-high 15 boards.
Overall, TCU, who led by as many as 44 Wednesday, controlled the game for the majority of the night and used a strong defensive presence to limit UTA to only 21.2 percent from the floor on 14-of-66 shooting, which ranks No. 8 all-time in program history for lowest field goal percentage allowed in a single game.
Simply put, TCU dominated the first half of play, closing the half on a 43-5 run after the Mavericks had jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage. During that stretch, the Purple and White used relentless defense to force UTA into two long stretches of play where the Mavs didn't record a basket for over seven and five minutes of play, respectively. UTA's 11 points at halftime is the fifth-fewest first half points allowed in program history. The 34-point halftime lead is also tied for the ninth-largest in program history by a Horned Frog squad.
Sverrisdottir started the second half just like she did the first period of play, scoring 12 of the Frogs' first 16 points of the second half. The senior's three with 14 minutes left in the second half secured a new career high.
Carter made the score 68-26 late in the game, drilling a three from the top of the key at the 9:38 mark of the second half to give TCU then its biggest lead of the game. UTA continued to battle though, trimming the deficit slightly before Rachel Rentschler got into the act, scoring a three of her own from the right side of the court to push TCU back up by 42 points.
Wynn connected on a three-point play with a little over one minute remaining in the game to make the score 80-37. Fellow freshman Meagan Henson put the finishing touches on a dominating night for the Frogs, going one-of-two from the charity stripe to bring the final score to 81-39.
Early in the game, Sverrisdottir brought the Frogs within one at 6-5 with a three from the top of the key. The senior, who opened the game scoring 13 of the Frogs' first 17 points, continued her offensive onslaught a few moments later, draining six-straight points, including a tough three-point play in the paint to give the Frogs the early lead.
Continuous pressure on the defensive end helped TCU take a sizeable advantage halfway through the first half and open the game wide open. During a span of 7 minutes, 49 seconds, the Frogs not only held UTA without a basket, but also forced many of the Mavericks 15 first half turnovers.
Gross increased the Horned Frog lead to 27-8 halfway through the half, while Wynn found the bottom of the net on a running lay-up to continue the offensive onslaught with a less then 4 minute remaining in the period.
Following a 36-2 run midway through the half that saw TCU record back-to-back three's, UTA finally got on the board, connecting on a three-point play to halt the impressive TCU run.
Carter's three with less then 40 seconds remaining pushed the Horned Frog lead to 45-11 at the half.
TCU will return to the hardwood Sunday afternoon at No. 7/8 Texas A&M. Start time is set for 2 p.m. in College Station.
